Parkmobile - Phone App and Pay by Phone Parking

Updated on February 7, 2016

Parkmobile

Have you ever found yourself on the doctor's exam table and realize that your parking meter just ran out? Or you're in a long check-out line at a store during the holidays and the meter is running out. You don't want to lose your place in line. What do you do?

Well I just found a great system that solves this problem - Parkmobile. You can pay for extra parking time for your meter or parking station from your cell phone.. How's that for convenient! The product was formed in Europe in 2000 and came to this country in January 2008. . It can be found in many cities, stadiums, universities, hospitals, airports, and other locations.

It's so convenient. Just download the app, register your car and cell phone, and you're all set up. You can pay for your parking, and even extend the parking time, by using the app on your cell phone, calling the toll free number, or using the Internet. The following smart phones are supported:

- iPhone, iPad, iPod

- Android

- Windows Phone 7

- Blackberry

How Does Parkmobile Work?

Using Parkmobile is very easy. There is even a tutorial you can follow. Park where the Parkmobile green signs and stickers are posted

  1. Register your car(s) and cell phone(s) with Parkmobile. You can use the smart phone free Parkmobile app or their web site.
  2. Park your car in a Parkmobile zone. You will know if Parkmobile is available if you see their green sign or stickers.
  3. Use the mobile app or call their toll free number to activate the parking session. Key in the zone number. If there is a space #, key that in too.
  4. If you like, set up an email or text message alert that will notify you that your parking sessions will expire in 15 minutes.
  5. If you're not back to your car before the parking session ends, use your mobile app or call the toll free number to extend your parking session. You can even end your session remotely.
  6. Bonus feature - can't find your car? Go to the "Find My Car" setting. and turn on "Location Services to Allow Parkmobile to Determine Your Location", then it can show you where your car is. It costs you nothing to find your car.

My First Introduction to Parkmobile

Not too long ago, I dropped my partner off at the hospital and went to go look for a parking spot. Right in front of me, a car was pulling out. I parked and realized I had no change. Thankfully, there was a pay station that would take a credit card. And then I looked up and saw the sign you see in this picture. I immediately investigated this service. I wrote down the name of the website, phone number and zone number.

While I was in the waiting room, I downloaded the app onto my iPhone and registered for the service. I needed to enter the following information:

Mobile phone number

Email address

User name

Password

License plate number

State or Province

Description of car (not required)

I added the zone number (4412 as on the sign) and tested the system. It worked well. I didn't have to extend any time, but at least I know I can without looking for change or a place to get change.

See the emails and text message I received from Parkmobile:

This is the parking confirmation I received when I activated a parking session for 1/2 hour.

I like to see people's opinions of Parkmobile. I have noticed that there are a few complaints from some customers, mostly regarding getting a ticket from a parking operator even though you paid for parking. The parking ticket can be fought but it is a hassle. The fees might seem high, but they actually are reasonable for the service you get.

This Parkmobile system is a rip-off the punter preying on first timers who don't realize that when you pay by Mobile or Android app you have to remember to STOP the charges from accruing after the parking time expires. I was unaware that you continue paying even after you leave the spot, unless you send a cancellation, there is also no refund policy or claims process. Unless someone can tell me otherwise.

Parkmobile is quite convenient use it all the time in Oakland. However it is NOT foolproof. Yesterday received a parking ticket ($58!!!) during an active parkmobile session. Had to file a protest etc....so the email confirmation was very handy to have. But I guess if the meter person hasn't kept their app refreshed they don't get the sessions updated....or maybe they just weren't looking. PITA I must say to go through the protest process....too bad there's not a money back guarantee if you end up with a ticket during a valid parking session.

Im currenty receiving texts saying my account is suspended after a payment failed, Have been unable to log into the website for 4 days nor have they replied to my e-mails. I declined the opportunity to use the 60p/min helpline, which could quickly double my bill. Great idea being poorly executed. London Uk

Nice lens, with very interesting info. It sounds good, I do not think we have it in New Zealand, I have not heard of it before, but after reading this lens, if I do I will know what it is all about. Thanks for sharing.

@anonymous: That's true. And using the 800 number is simple to use. I was just so pleased to open the app hit a few buttons and I was done.

@SusanDeppner: Anyone that has a cell phone(not just a smartphone) can use the service. There's a 800 number to call into for registration and to start transactions on every piece of signage.

Great explanation of what sounds like a wonderful service! I live in a small town so we don't have anything like this, but I'd use it if I traveled to a larger town. Oh, and if I had a smart phone. (Another reason i need one!)
