Which GoPro Accessories do I need?

Updated on November 12, 2014
Source

Improve all your Exteme Sports videos and make the most of your GoPro Hero HD, Hero 2, Hero 3 and now the new Hero 4 Camera by adding accessories

Here you will find all the best GoPro Accessories, either genuine or aftermarket. The company itself makes over a dozen accessories for their cameras, but many options are available which can extend the use of this camera further and boost your enjoyment and the results you can attain!

One of the best things about the Go Pro HD Hero camera is it's ability to be placed just about anywhere, and the secret of creating enjoyable extreme sports and adventure footage is being able to use a variety of camera positions. Get a drone and you really can film from anywhere and capture the most amazing cinematic shots.

When I got my camera I used it solely on the chest mount, this is great for most sports, but the single constant position was not enabling me to create the films I wanted, I've included some professional as well as not so professional videos in the article, by studying them you will be able to see which different positions and mounting options, when combined, enable the film maker to create a much more compelling, entertaining and ultimately higher quality film.

The Coolest GoPro Accessory...

Drones have come a long way in such a short time, and the price continues to hold or even fall even with features being added all the time. There are models to suit every pocket (well almost!) some controlled with a traditional remote control, others via a Smartphone, all offer the chance to get a birds-eye view and capture video that just wouldn't be possible otherwise.

Quick Intro to the GoPro Hero Range of Cameras

GoPro makes the industry leader in POV (point of view) sports video cameras, you can often see their cameras attached to cars, motorcycles, in TV (Dana Brody filmed her father using one in the first season of the TV Series Homeland).

The quality, especially of the new 4K Hero 4 cameras, is incredible and the camera's light weight, compact size and waterproof case enables the camera to be used for almost any activity you can think of, especially when combined with the best GoPro accessories, of which there is a vast array for just about any sport or occasion imaginable.

The HD Hero 4 is the latest edition, which adds an integrated touch screen as the major upgrade on the Hero 3 (which at the time of writing is still available). The four also offers improved low-light performance, customisable exposure settings with an extra long nighttime mode that works great with timelapse, and an improved operating system making the camera easier to use.

There is also an entry level GoPro Hero that can be purchased for little more than $100, compatible with all the accessories this is a great camera for use in high risk situations or you just don't need the specification of the higher level models but want the reassurance The only real drawbacks are the non-removable battery and the fact the waterproof case is integral to the camera, meaning any damage may well finish the camera off or good.

Don't have a GoPro Camera yet?

The range is topped by the Hero 4 Black camera - complete with 4K 30fps professional quality video and is the obvious choice if you need to make broadcast quality film

Accessories to provide more power! - Boost your GoPro recording time with one of these

This is one area where you need to take care to ensure you purchase the right type of additional battery for your Go Pro Camera. Below are the three best options for increasing the runtime of you camera. Look at the item description or click on the link to check which one you need - GoPro Hero 2 or Hero 3 models.

The best buy in my opinion is one of the Wasabi chargers that come with an additional two batteries, this provides the opportunity to both recharge and record at the same time, either using a wall socket of a 12v vehicle outlet. Additionally the Wasabi batteries are a slightly higher capacity than the standard GoPro which means less swapping of batteries!

If you want to stay with an official item then the Battery BacPac is a good option, but only comes with a single battery and is over twice the price of the Wasabi offering! It is however compatible with all versions of the Hero Cameras.

Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack) and Charger for GoPro HERO3+, HERO3 and GoPro AHDBT-201, AHDBT-301, AHDBT-302
Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack) and Charger for GoPro HERO3+, HERO3 and GoPro AHDBT-201, AHDBT-301, AHDBT-302

The version for the Hero 3 and 3+, probably the most essential Gopro accessory you can get.

Increase the run time of the camera without having to change batteries, compatible with all version other than the most basic entry level model.

Why you need a tripod for your GoPro Camera

Capturing shots from different angles is what can truly make for a spectacular film, using a tripod allows you to set up your camera in a stationary position and film the action as it passes by, by editing together different footage taken from a variety of takes your videos will be much more interesting and memorable.

JOBY GorillaPod Hybrid. Multiuse and Flexible Camera Tripod for up to 1 kg (2.2lbs)

The Joby GorillaPod Hybrid is I think the perfect companion for the GoPro camera, it comfortably holds the weight of the camera, is light and easy to transport, and will grab hold of door handles, branches, railing, bars, in fact with it's rubberised legs almost any surface.

It comes with a ball head mount and one detachable quick release head that includes a bubble level, helping you make sure your shots are level (if that's what you want), all at a fantastic price.

More GoPro Tripod Accessories

Having a tripod adapter for your GoPro Camera opens up even more options - all camera equipment fitted with a standard 1/4-20 tripod screw fitting can now be used to mount your camera!

GoPro GTRA30 Tripod Mount
GoPro GTRA30 Tripod Mount

A simple accessory and one that many people wonder why it wasn't included with the camera in the first place, but it doesn't cost much so no real complaints from me.

Smatree SmaPole S1 All-aluminum Alloy Handheld Telescopic Pole for GoPro Hero 5/4/3+/3/2/1/Session (15.8″to 40.5″)

Easily the best monopod / hand hold extender for the GoPro, doesn't need a tripod mount like traditional monopod and comes with aluminium fittings for a secure fit.

Really makes a difference if you are using the GoPro as a camcorder, helps keep things much more steady.

Using your GoPro when Skiing & Snowboarding

The HD Hero range of cameras is ideally suited to capturing your skiing adventures, the variety of mounting options can make for very exciting footage.

As always a mixture of angles and perspecitves, when edited together, will give the best most entertaining resulting film.

To do this consider mounting your camera on your head (facing forwards or backwards), on your chest, on your ski pole, on your wrist of even on your ski or snowboard.

Ski and Snowboard Boot Mounting

Polarizing Filters

Snow = glare, these will help cut down this problem and enhance your videos for a very modest outlay.

What you are really looking for is a polarising filter as these will help reduce the glare caused by light being reflected from the snow (this light is highly directed, which is why it appears so bright, but this directness enables a filter to be made that can block this light, while allowing more natural, diffused light, to still reach the camera).

Adding a colored filter can enhance contrast, red is good underwater as it will boost blue colors, magenta is good in greener water though.

It is also worth using some anti-fogging inserts, especially if the air or water is cold - any trapped moisture (and there will be some, even a tiny amount), will condense on to the coldest part of the camera - the glass lens, as it is cooled by the air or water.

Provides yet another angle - great to capture the look of concentration on your face as you get your knee down on the Nürburgring!

GoPro Watersports and Diving Accessories

One of the best features of the GoPro camera is it's waterproof case (to 197' or 60m), combined with the excellent quality and flexible mounting options, means the camera can be taken almost anywhere!

Of course there are risks with taking any expensive consumer electronics out on or below water, but fortunately there are many ways to help protect your camera from loss or damage, in this section I'll show you some of the best gopro accessories for helping you use and secure your camera in the water.

You can still buy the GoPro Hero2 Surf Camera, this comes with a couple of surfboard mounts, a floaty backdoor that attaches in replacement of the standard door and provides additional buoyancy in case the camera was to become detached from the board.

If you find yourself with the opportunity to dive, swim, sail, surf or jet ski with your camera then take some time to review these great accessories to ensure your camera is protected and ideally configured for the task!

A hand held floating grip for your GoPro camera, such a simple idea that works great.

When the camera gets cold, as it may do when diving, then any moisture in the air within the case will condense on the lens and can cause a blurred image.

GoPro HERO3 Floaty Back Door

No more sinking GoPro camera, give yourself peace of mind that even if the mount breaks or a leash fails your camera will bob around on the surface, the bright red floatation block making it easy to find.

GoPro's Fetch Dog POV Video

This cool new accessory should in theory be essential for anyone with a dog. It's two mounts (one below the chest, one above the head) aim to provide the perfect vantage point to record your best-friend's adventures while out on a run, a walk, hunting, or just exploring in the undergrowth.

Because the camera is waterproof you don't need to worry if he takes a swim, or if the weather has been wet lately.

However, the reviews on this latest accessory are mixed "should have never seen the light of day" being particularly scathing.

Seems that the top mount is preferred to the bottom fixing if you want to avoid shaky footage which is a shame really given that in general these cameras work best when they are close to the action.

The shape and size of your dog will clearly have a big influence on how well this works, so either give it a try or check out the non-GoPro options.

The official GoPro dog mounting harness is very new and so far does not have a huge following amongst users, but if you must have the official project then this is the one. Otherwise check out the Kurgo below.

Having been around a little longer than the GoPro Fetch, the Kurgo has a stronger fan base. It doesn't actually come with a GoPro mount - you'll have to use one of the sticky mounts that come with your camera (or buy another).

Protecting your investment - GoPro Cases - Store and protect your camera and accessories with these great cases

The cases, specifically designed for the Hero camera, will help both protect, organize and transport all your gopro accessories. Here are some of the top rated cases from POV, UK Pro and SKB, they will all float, are waterproof, and contain ready cut-out foam cushioning to protect your camera, don't make do with a flimsy soft camera case.

Mounting your GoPro on a Helmet

Often people refer to the GoPro as a helmet mounted camera, and there are a variety of mounting options for those sports that require you to wear a helmet, be that motorcross, cycling, mountain biking, skydiving or motor racing. Most versions of the HD Hero Camera come with stick on mounts that allow you to firmly attach the camera to both flat and curved smooth surfaces.

However, by adding accessories you can further tune the position of the camera, film yourself or mount to cycle helmets and other vented designs.

Cycle mounting options for the GoPro Hero Camera

Instead of wearing your camera, either on your body, or attached to a helmet, you can of course mount the camera onto your bicycle too.

This can allow you to get very dramatic shots of your riding or even of yourself riding your bike. The video below is great (if slightly extreme) example of an unusual angle creating a great effect.

Other options are to attach it to your seat post, forks or stem, and if combined with some of the GoPro extenstions, you can get all sorts of effects.

The only official accessory is the GoPro Handlebar Seatpost Mount which you can see above.

A number of aftermarket options are also available, mainly from eBay, check out the box below the video for some cool accessories.

@anonymous: Hey Bonehead, thanks for leaving the comment - I hadn't noticed that this link was incorrect now that the Go Pro HD Hero 3 took microSD cards (the Hero 2 takes normal SD cards). I'm sorry you had the hassle of purchasing the wrong type for your camera, and I've added an update to the links above. Thanks again.

Thanks to your blog, I ended up buying an SD card (your #5 link) when you need a MICRO SD card! My fault, I should have focused on the instructions and GoPro site first! You should also be more accurate with your info.
