Everyday things can become new again

Updated on May 13, 2012

Saving environment

To start saving the environment , home is the first step to start recycling things that can still be reused instead of buying new things. It saves you some money and save the environment. I always buy packet shower cream instead of those big plastic bottle because i just have to refill the packet of shower cream into the plastic bottle. Also packet shower cream is a little cheaper then you purchase the whole bottle of shower cream.

Reuse items like bags and containers when possible. When i buy cook food to bring home , the restaurant pack cook food in plastic container , i recycle them by using them to keep things in the home like packet sugar or teabags etc instead of discarding them. Also you can use it for your pet as a container to drink water or you can use the round plastic container as a cover for your shower drainage hole to keep cockroaches or small flies from entering. Anything that i bought which has a plastic container will be recycle to use in my home , like those instant bird nest beverage come with plastic container , i reused them for putting toothbrush , cotton buds or cotton wools. Also use reusable plates and utensils instead of disposable ones. Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones . Shop with a canvas bag instead of using paper or plastic bag. Reuse packaging cartons and shipping materials. Old newspapers make a great packaging material. By recycling all this instead of discarding them and is bad for the environment.

I used lemons in electric pot to remove stains left over by boiling mineral water as i do not use dishwasher detergent to clean the electric pot. It save money and also is easier to clean using lemon slices then dishwasher detergent. Coffee powder at home has been recycle to put them inside my potted plants instead of throwing them away. Water use for washing rice has been reused on my potted plants too. Not only we wont waste unnecessary water , we pay less for water usage.

As for saving electricity at home , i light candles around the home and in the toilet so that i be using less electricity and paying less for electric power each month. Is cheaper this way and also scented candles can lift up your spirit and make your home smell really nice. Connect your outdoor lights to a timer .Buy green electricity produced by low or even zero pollution facilities. Use cold water instead of warm or hot water when possible. Plant trees to shade your home , replace old windows with energy efficient ones. keep your thermostat higher in summer and lower in winter when you are away. Clean or replace air filters on your air conditioning unit at least once a month. Turn down or shut off your water heater when you will be away for extended periods. Set refrigerator temperature at 36 to 38 and your freezer at 0 to 5 .

This are the few ways we can do our bit to save the planet and environment by recycling and also saving cost on things we don't need to use . Our bills will be reduced excessively by end of each month.

Hey Violet , thanks.. glad u enjoy reading some of my hubs & me too enjoying your hubs -)

As for recycling stuffs we all should have done this long time ago then there wont be any global warming. I guess mankind are going back to olden ways of doing things and not take anything too much for granted. We just have to start taking care of the planet we live in starting with doing small things and slowly hopefully it will return back to the times we never heard of global warming. Is every humans responsiblity to save this planet which we called Home.

      Good day -)

      Hi patski,

I really liked reading your hub and learning new ways to recycle. I live in California and in our community we have three trash cans for trash that goes to the landfill, one for green stuff from the yard that can be mulched and used again by the city, and one for plastic, cans etc. to be recycled. The goal is to have as little as possible in the can with the landfill trash.
