Advancements in communication and information technology (C-IT) have contributed to overall development of people across the world.Everybody talks about C-IT revolution and its role. Many functions performed by human beings could be replaced by electronic equipment. The emerging C-IT are covering entire span of human activity. Electronic shopping, banking, education, polling and voting in politics, medical treatment being some of these. Global interaction is beginning to dramatically alter the world.Multinational corporation are doing business through it.

C-IT strengthens the hands of teachers making teaching more effective.

Emerging technologies in education: future trends

Satellite is a powerful communication tool to exchange information globally. Computers have provided a lot of capacity to store and exchange information. The human computer interface has made communication more efficient in terms of cost, time and reliability. This is why communication technologies are becoming popular in transmitting and receiving messages, images and voice. The C-IT are enabling the teachers to develop multimedia in which text, pictures, voice can be integrated & delivered through computers as an interactive type of learning package. The technologies will enable to develop virtual classrooms, virtual conferences, virtual universities. This new development can revolutionise future of education. Virtual classrooms are also being developed in developing countries like Thailand, Malaysia, India. To compete in the competitive world remaining up to date in technology is required. This will allow efficient flow of data, images and voice. The borders of countries can be crossed by C-IT changing the world into a global village.

Technology brings the following changes-

-Treatment of students:new technologies provide more industrialized learning in terms of content, time and length.

-work of teachers: use of technology in education changes the way teachers organise and implement teaching activities.

-Technolgy enabled learning can increase productivity.

Audio-video technology

Interactive broadcasting

The broadcasting mode, both radio and TV are being used for education at primary, secondary and higher education level from a long time. However, delivery is only one way.Interaction is a key feature of face to face teaching. One major characteristic of emerging media is potential for interaction. Broadcasts are being tried to be made interactive. Students can ask questions, clarify doubts. Radio is a mass medium and has been made interactive. This is facilitated by phone-in system. Interactive radio broadcast is being used in tele teaching.

Satellite radio:

Satellite radio has overcome the limitation of FM radio which is of limited reach.Key components of satellite radio system are satellite, ground repeaters and radio receivers. Broadcast uplink their signals to the satellite.

Computer technology

Print, audio and video technology are converging today at computer. The convergence of these media make learner, the user as managers of large body of information available on a computer.

Benefit offered by computer technology is it's speed with which it can manage learning process. The computer therefore is useful tool for training and education. It is easy for teacher and students to understand difficult concepts through computer animation, graphics.A study conducted by USA concluded that computer based tools reduced learning time by 30%.The finding is based on defence training.

Virtual education

Virtual classroom, learning circles, networked learning, online education are newer approaches to teaching. Virtual education aims at providing computer generated virtual environment. The various objects in artificial world behave the same way as in real world. In real world we perceive objects by our senses, seeing, hearing. In virtual world computers are used for creating visual environment, audio environment to take care for input to 3 senses.

Video disc: It has tremendous capacity to store information, visuals, data.

Compact disc-interactive:is optical storage system for educational market. It is audio video tool that supports play back format.

Speech recognition: is innovation in communication technology. This feature allows computer to recognize human speech. It translates the spoken words.

Telecommunication and networks

Here students can interact with electronic teachers.

Communication satellite: are increasing the number of people learning at a distance. It reaches remote students.

Direct to home (DTH):DTH will open up new technology for TV viewers. It will give facility of clear picture quality and sound. It will be useful for scattered population.

Teleconferencing: links users located at different places by con computer and audio-video technology. It is emerging as a valuable tool for education. It can be used for questioning, group discussion. It can link various colleges and universities.

Mobile communication

Learners can be provided with electronic gadgets like cellular phone, radio through which they can be in contact with their teachers while they are mobile for business and other purposes. Specially designed mobile vans fitted with talk back facilities, audio can also be developed. Interested group can be created around learning center.
