Sennheiser CX 300B MK II Earbuds - To Keep The Neighbors Quiet

Updated on March 18, 2014

I always wanted to own a pair of Sennheiser earphones, earbuds or headphones, and finally this opportunity presented itself to me just two weeks ago when I decided that I will buy a new pair of Sennheiser CX 300 II earbuds because I've had enough. Of my neighbors, that is. But let me explain.

I'm working from home, which means I'm at home pretty much all day long. While this is in fact awesome and I prefer it much more to working in a cubicle at a 9-5 dayjob, it does have its problems as well. One of them being noisy neighbors.

As luck would have it, I'm blessed to live next to a building that is rented out to various dancing, gym and yoga classes. Which means these guys are noisy. Their music is loud, there are small kids who are shouting all the time and the women when they're out on a break are literally shouting on their cellphone right below my balcony.

Having suffered enough of this noise I decided to research for a good pair of earphones or headphones, whatever would do the job better to be able to cancel out all that noise that is happening right next to me every single day of the week. Afterall I have to work in the morning too!

Why I decided on the Sennheiser CX 300 II earbuds

I researched various brands, from Philips to Bose and finally to Sennheiser. Philips was ok, the Bose brands were darn expensive for my current budget (although they say they're really some of the best out there), and I finally went with the Sennheiser brand because I've heard lots of good things about it from various online forums, including health forums, music related forums and gadget related forums.

And trust me, those folks are genuine reviewers and are only recommending what is working best for them.

First of all I decided that I would go for a set of earbuds because I think they can cancel out noise even better than the huge headphones, which are also a pain to have on the head all the time (I have an older pair and I find them a bit heavy on the head).

Next I wanted a pair that had different earbuds to choose from. Afterall not everyone has the same size ears. What if the default size is too big for my ears and I can't insert them properly? Or what if they fall out of my ears altogether? The Sennheiser CX 300 has 3 sets of earbuds - a default size, a larger size and a smaller size (see photos taken by me at the bottom of this page). I figured from the 3 sizes one will have to surely fit.

And finally I wanted a pair that would really make it nice and quiet for me to work. And all the reviews I saw online recommended this pair as doing the job quiet well.

So after a few hours or careful research, I decided to go with this pair. The price was quite attractive as well - at well below $50 for the pair I couldn't go wrong. I bought them at Amazon.

When they arrived, I couldn't wait to try them out. I ripped the package apart, took the earbuds and stuck the regular size bud in my ears to try them out. Thankfully the mid size (the one that comes with the actual earphones) was a perfect match.

So what about the rest of my expectations about the Sennheiser CX 300 II earbuds?

Not only the earbuds fit nicely in my ear (see below photo on how it looks in my own ear), but it's very convenient as well to have them in without becoming uncomfortable even after a few hours of wear.

Next the noise. Oh how I love this feature! It is so quite in my head (and no, not from voices in MY head, lol) that literally all noise is cancelled out. Now granted, if a bunch of women are talking loudly below my balcony, I can still hear them. But the noise made by them is much more muted, much more manageable. And every other noise - e.g. dogs barking, cars passing by, are literally non-existent for me anymore, for as long as I have the earbuds in.

One of the cable ends is twice as long than the other, which means you'll use that end behind the neck and into the opposite ear. This keeps cable clutter to a minimum.

Btw I love the little pouch that comes with the earbuds to keep the extra sizes in it to avoid losing them. It is a really comfy pouch and I love it.

And finally an unexpected benefit from having the earbuds in my ears - when I listen to music, or I am playing a computer game, the sound is so much better than with my old headphones. Everything is sharper, clearer and the base is nice and rich. Listening to music has become a much better experience for me overall.

The bottom line

Based on my personal experience with these earbuds, if you want a pair to keep the noisy neighbor chatter to a minimum, to avoid hearing cars and any ambient noise while you're focused on something specific, or just to listen to music and really enjoy the quality that comes through to your ears, the Sennheiser CX300 II earbuds fit the purpose greatly. Not to mention their great price, which is in my opinion - unbeatable.

If you're not happy with the pouch your earbuds came with, this hardcase is a better candidate and will take care of your earbuds much better.

@Frischy: I've only had them for a little while so I can't comment just now about how long they will last. I guess I will come back to this question in a month or two after I've had plenty of time to really use them every day.

My teenager goes through earbuds like crazy. Maybe it is because I buy her cheap ones. I wonder if investing in a pair of these would be worthwhile for her. Are they more durable than say a $10 pair? Or would she tear these up in a few weeks also?
