Solar-Powered Battery Chargers

Updated on March 7, 2014

Solar-Powered Battery Chargers

If you are a person who is always out and about, and who carries your mobile device/s everywhere you go, then these chargers are for you. They will give your device a boost in energy when you need it the most - which, in my case, is all the time.

Solar-powered battery chargers work on the principle of solar power, in that they need direct sunlight for a full charge. However, even on a cloudy day only charging your device for a few minutes could be all the time you need for that last call, or last photograph.

Because of the fast pace of society in the present day, it has now become imperative that we keep our mobile devices charged as much as possible. Obviously we cannot be around electrical socket points all day - which is where portable solar-powered battery charges come in extremely useful.

The thing about these chargers is that many of them can power-up more than one device at a time. Again, this is one of the reasons why they are now becoming one of the most wanted items around. So, is it any wonder that people want their devices charged at all times - especially in cases of emergency. The way solar-powered battery chargers work is that they take their energy directly from the glare of the sun. A full charge will take around 7-8 hours in direct sunlight so be aware of this if you wish to purchase a solar charger.

However, this does not mean that they will not work during times when the sun is not showing. They will continue to work but they will charge more slowly. However, as stated, it is better to make at least that one crucial phone call home - or to the emergency services [even it it's only for a few minutes] if you ever did need them. They really can mean the difference between life and death in many cases.

There was one particular case in which my solar-powered battery charger came in very handy indeed. A woman had been hill-walking with her ten year old son in Wales. Her son had been involved in an accident in which he had actually broken his leg. His mother could not ring the emergency services on her phone as she was out of battery. I stumbled upon them and I could immediately see that her son was on agony, and she was trying not to panic.

I was almost out of charge on my phone but then I remembered that I had brought with me my solar charger, The weather was grim and I knew that solar charges only fully worked in bright sunlight. However I told the woman not to panic, and proceeded to charge my phone.

Even if I got only five minutes out of it - which I actually did - it was enough to call for an ambulance. The woman and her son were eventually taken to hospital, and my solar charger had saved the day. So, they really are crucial at such times.

Solar-Powered Battery Chargers

If you are out and about there is nothing worse than running low on battery power when it comes to your mobile devices. Whether it is your phone, MP3 player or any other kind of mobile device, running out of battery power can be a big problem and a source of frustration.

However, on the market, there are chargers you can purchase which power up your device using the solar energy of the sun. These chargers, as you can imagine, are extremely useful and, in the most extreme of circumstances, can mean the difference between life and death too.

When you purchase your solar-power battery charger they normally come supplied with all the connections you need for your mobile devices. Keep in mind, however, that they take around 7-8 hours to fully charge up. This, however, is dependent upon the sun actually showing up. This is because solar-powered battery chargers need direct sunlight to fully charge.

However, even if it is a cloudy day, the charger will still power up, but not as fast as it would in direct sunlight. Yet you will have to weigh up the pros and cons. The pros being that even if you only get three minutes of power for that one last shot with your camera, or one last call on your phone - which could be an emergency - that could be all you need.

The fact of the matter is that solar-powered battery chargers are a Godsend to those of us - like myself - who always carry around our mobile devices. The vast majority of people these days will always need to charge their devices at some point while they are out. It is then, you will find, that these wonderful chargers really do come into their own.

When picking what charger to purchase however, I would steer clear of the cheaper brands. This is mainly because such chargers use batteries which are low-capacity and they also use components which are quite bulky. This is not too bad if you are indoors, but not so good if you are outside. The most basic solar chargers are cheap to purchase, but the saying is certainly true, that you get what you pay for.

If you are determined to purchase a solar battery charger, than I would suggest going for a name that is known to you. This is far more preferable than buying cheap, bulky chargers that will only charge low-capacity batteries.

Great device, thanks for the heads up! I remember that a few years ago - some cheater created a fake application for smartphones, which was supposed to make it possible to charge them with the help of solar energy (as if these phones had the necessary sensors! :D ), but it's great to see that now - something like that is available in shops. I'm definitely going to buy one myself!
