It happens to all manufacturers, eventually one of their products will need to be recalled. If it is a car you are sent a notice, a safety recall made on appliances and children's toys are made public by the manufacturer and the media. However, you are rarely notified by an electronic manufacturer that one of their tv's are under recall. For example, Sony. There are over 25 Sony television models that have an active recall that will allow replacement of specified parts under full extended warranty. Most consumers do not find out about these warranty extension until they have a problem with the television. Many more people, however, will simply pay for the repair of their television or buy a new one because they don't know they can call Sony and check for recalls.
Many of these recalls are for the optocal block or light engine. Some of these Sony SXRD models were involved in a class action suit. There is also a recall on select Sony LCD models that allow for LCD panel replacement under warranty.
