Start Your Own Blogging Business: a How-to-Build-a-Blog Guide

Updated on October 25, 2014

How Your Blog Can Generate Income From Advertisers, Subscribers and Merchandising

Start Your Own Blogging Business, from Entrepreneur Magazine's Startup Series, is a comprehensive guide for anyone who wants to make money on the Internet through a blog. Author Jason R. Rich touches many bases in describing what it takes to build a money-generating blog, and the book is now in its second edition (ISBN: 978-1599183763).

A Complete Guide for Newcomers to Blogging

I searched for a simple step-by-step guide that would give me the basics on how to set up a blog and possibly make money off it. Start Your Own Blogging Business accomplishes that, but there's actually more to the book than just advice for beginners.

A full half of the book is dedicated to what you need to do once your blog is up and running -- how to build business and make money!

So if you are just looking into beginning your blog, or you already are blogging and want to generate some cash, this book has some advice for you!

Choosing Your Topic, Domain Name and Web Host!

How To Get Started

Start Your Own Blogging Business devotes the first quarter of the book to a detailed guide on how to set up your blog. It defines the questions you need to ask, including the primary one: What's the point of your blog?

You will have to approach your blog differently if you see it as a business rather than for personal expression, and author Jason R. Rich raises several ideas for you to ponder as you choose the topic of your blog. I realized when I read that chapter that I would have to devote more time to develop my ideas before I would have a chance to launch a money-generating blog.

He has good tips on how to choose a URL for your blog that will be easy to remember and help attract readers, and does a really strong job explaining what you need to examine with hosting services before you choose one. As he points out, it would be a disaster to find out too late that the service you chose can't handle your blog if your efforts to gain traffic pay off!

From First Post to Blogroll

Promoting Your Blog, Building Your Audience

Start Your Own Blogging Business makes things clear right up front: It is very unlikely you will get rich right away no matter what kind of blog you publish. In fact, author John R. Rich presents a good argument that you will want to start slowly so you can get into your rhythm and test your blog on various web browsers while you are still new and unknown.

His advice is to build enough of an archive to show your consistency and generate feedback from your first few readers before you really branch out to full-bore promotion. That's a great idea. Just looking back at my first lenses I can see how much I've improved on Squidoo (though of course with lenses I can update them). I imagine that a blog will be the same -- you will look back at your first entries and think of all the things you could have done better.

Best to get the kinks out before shouting to the world that your blog exists!

Once you are at a spot where you feel good about your blog, you can follow the steps in Start Your Own Blogging Business to promote your blog and build an audience. Please note that the author gives a light explanation of search-engine optimization and keyword techniques, with the advice that there are more detailed books on those topics. Even so, I think he did a decent job explaining the topics.

Business Types and Perez Hilton

Start Your Own Blogging Business also contains pages that describe the various types of companies that exist in the U.S. and things to consider such as registering your business name and hiring help. These topics are just mentioned in passing really, and I wouldn't make any decisions on the information here. There are more complete examinations of those issues in books that specifically address those topics.

The book also contains a Question-and-Answer interview with Perez Hilton, one of the biggest bloggers out there. It seems strange to spend the whole book explaining how much hard work it is to build a successful blog and make money off it, then end with a profile of a blogger who claims he barely had to do anything to attract traffic and become a success. The book says his blog gets 9 million hits a day, so it is definitely something very special and unique -- hardly an example for most of us.

Even so, I would recommend Starting Your Own Blogging Business as a valuable step-by-step guide that can help you establish a blog that, given your choice of topics and hard work, has a chance at being a money-generator.

Are You a Blogger Yet?

After reading Start Your Own Blogging Business I am reconsidering whether the blog I was wanted to start is worth my time and effort. My friends and I play an old-fashioned strategy game called The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (similar to Risk but way more complicated), and I thought about starting a blog just to keep track of our games, but with the hope that I might be able to attract some cash. I now realize that the audience for such a blog would be so limited that it's unlikely to be a money-generator. That's not to say I won't do it, as I think it would be fun for the guys and me. I just have to decide whether it's worth the time knowing it probably won't make any money.

How about you? Are you considering a blog, or have you started one? At what stage are you?

Wonderful article on the hub I guess. Blogging has always and will always be a successful business approach to them that know what they are doing.

Starting out as a newbie to blogging is daunting really considering so many divergent views on what to do, where to start and many more.

Despite all these information overload online, if your desire is greater than your fears you will definitely start blogging anyway.

What platform should I use, should I start free or go with paid blogs.

The best answer was given in the article above. If you want to be a real business man do know that indeed every business start with a cost. It may not necessarily be your own money lol but whoever it is, there is always a cost associated to starting a business and blogging is no exception.

If you online hoping to start a blog without spending any money then please just forget it because you will burn out with the many trail and error you will encounter. That may be harsh but it's the stark reality we all face.

Blogging does pays because I know many that are earning great income online from it. Though it pays, the sacrifices and patience required to succeed is what determines a successful blogger and a damn failure. Don't ever start a blog thinking it will replace your income in a couple of months because it won't. Every business has its gestation period and so it is with blogs. You have to design it, Put quality content in there and there get to work to MARKET It.

The hardest part of all is ways to market your blog. If you can learn the trade of marketing your blogs, trust me you will make money but not until after a year. I have a two months old blog that just pays me $0.02 a day and am i worried? will i quit? No! Why? Because I went to college for four years paying hefty fees and yet never earned that amount of money until after graduation.

Let's all see this as an investment into our future and work and fight for it and we will surely get to where we intent to.

Thanks for the full and helpful information. One remark - I wouldn't recommend Godaddy for hosting - it is too slow and might damage your position on search engine results. I had switched to another host and the upload speed of my blog jumped up. Turns our it has a very strong effect on the position on google search results, and my blog finally entered the first page.

I won a copy of 'I Will Teach You To Be Rich' in a HubPages competition and didn't read it until a wealthy and money-savvy friend did pick it up and read it cover to cover and pronounced it very sound. I've done a lot of blogging, was even very consistent at one point for over a year, but stopped. When I stopped I did it because someone told me to post all my articles/blogs on ezines instead.. so I did that for about 2 years. Then I grew tired of that even though I have had over 100K views on Ezine Articles and Buzzle combined. I decided that until I had more products to sell online that that made no sense either. I had some sales but not enough to justify all my work. I still get a few hundred hits per month on the existing ezines though. Maybe I'll start up again after I combine my two websites.. which was/is yet another problem, I never had control of my first website as a designer did it and it was/is way too complicated for me, so I could never add more products to it even if I wanted to. Gads.. too much info I know. This is a really good lens though that has me thinking. Thanks. Blessed!
