The Fatgirl's Closet

Updated on September 27, 2014

Ever Wonder What is In Her Closet?

Welcome to the Fatgirl's Closet lens. Here we will delve into the closets of ten women who have invited us into the inner sanctum of their clothing storage.

The media constantly makes jokes about women and their closets. We all know that the truth is often spoken in jest but now we get to see the different kinds of "real" closets out there as well as get the short and the sweet about how fatgirls feel about their clothing storage space (s).

Jennifer - Model / Writer / Blogger

Jennifer Allen plus size blogger

Jennifer Allen is a professional plus size model ~ and one of the original Ford Models "12 Plus Big Beauties". Though she enjoyed success in the city, Jennifer left New York to pursue a quieter lifestyle in the Smoky Mountains. Married to Mr Wonderful and "Mom" to her canine kids, she continues to work regularly as a model and appears on-camera in editorial roles, and as host and moderator for the American Hospital Association and various non-profit groups. Jennifer has her own beauty blog, writes for an assortment of magazines and online publications, and has illustrated one children's book. In her spare time, she enjoys eating ~ because she can.

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized? In other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Jennifer: I consider my closet not just organized ~ but hyper-organized! Given its restrictive size, my "there's no way you're going to fit all that in there" wardrobe and questionable lighting, order and accessibility are key. Garment types are hung with like garments, left to right. They are further grouped according to lengths, then ordered once more by color, dark to light. Cardigans, sweater pull-overs and shells are neatly folded and stacked above, organized not by color, but by gauge and thickness. Bins of lingerie, scarves and clutches are stowed on the topmost shelf. Brackets installed over the door between the jamb and ceiling hold two wardrobe boxes for sunglasses storage. Shoes organized in mesh bins are fastened to walls and set atop what is the closet's true function -- an air return. Heels and boots have their own mini shelf down below. Purses are grouped by style, and are easily accessible via a short wall of large hooks.

Moe: What is the most used area of your closet?

Jennifer: The most used area of my closet is the space just outside the door. Mr Wonderful kindly attached a beveled mirror to the interior door. When open, I have a 3' by 3' space in which to stand and play "dress up".

Moe: What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Jennifer: My most coveted item is my Frye hybrid boots. They look great with pretty much everything and make me feel tough-girl chic!

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

Jennifer: Big, big, big! Did I mention it would need to be really big?

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

Jennifer: I am constantly editing my closet, throwing away worn-out items and donating the unworn as well as pieces that no longer fit. Once a year, I remove everything and only put back the best and the basics, making room for some of the new trends. A girl's gotta shop!

Moe: Describe your closet in one word.

Jennifer: Efficient.

Diana - Author / Blogger

Diana plus size blogger
Diana plus size blogger

Diana is a veteran and shameless clothes horse, aided and abetted by her blog, Fat Chic: It's not about trying to look thin. She has collapsed two closets and one bookshelf in her time, and now has distinct related fantasies about steel-reinforced beams.

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Diana: My closet is organized loosely, but could always be better. It's organized--but not tidy. I can find what I want pretty easily, because I've spent some time making sure I can see all my clothing at once. Of course, last year my overzealousness led to me completely collapsing the bar on one side of my closet, so I've had to lighten up what I own and modify what I use and when quite a bit since.

Moe: What is the most used area of your closet?

Diana: The underwear basket you see attached to the wall, and then from there probably the open "hanging shelves" as that's where I keep most of my casual/day-to-day wear.

Moe: What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Diana: I honestly don't know. I actually do have female friends who visit ask to see the closet / see my wardrobe (I try to only let them in when I've cleaned it up quite a bit). If I had to guess, I'd place my bets on the one-of-a-kind blue polka-dot dress by Size Queen.

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

Diana: A walk-in with built in drawers, shelves - where I can see EVERYTHING, with one of those power systems where I can just switch things out by pushing a button. Room for my spouse's stuff would also be very good. I borrow his sweaters a lot, especially since he's lost weight. Actually, my dream closet? The TARDIS.

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize the clothes in your closet?

Diana: I try to do a clean-out every time it's transition season - a lot of stuff goes to Goodwill then. I did more than one after the Closet Collapse of '11. It's supposed to be three items out for every item I bring in, but given that I blog about fashion for a living and have (semi) legitimate reasons for amassing that much clothing, it can be difficult to stay ahead of all of that. I also try to organize it every time I put laundry away. The walk-in is nice because I can just set up my Ipad and watch some videos while I put things away and straighten. As you can see from one shot, the laundry has yet to be put away this week. (Husband washes it, I put it away).

Liesl Binx plus size blogger

Liesl Binx is an upcoming plus size fashion designer & blogger who loves breaking stereotypes by wearing clothes that do not follow the philosophy of dressing to look "thinner". She just graduated from Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) with a fashion design degree and is working like crazy to debut her first collection of clothing!

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Liesl: Yes my closet is pretty organized, it's just when something goes missing that I end up ripping it apart!

Moe: What is the most used area of your closet?

Liesl: The most used area is the mirror.

Moe: What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Liesl: Right now it is the white knit dress I found at Target! I have been scouting for one of these dresses in my size for a while and was delighted to find it! (I'm wearing it in the photo.)

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

Liesl: My dream closet would be huge and all white with specific compartments for all of my stuff including jewelry. It would have an island in the middle with pajamas and underthings. Oh and a large vanity for makeup!

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

Liesl: I usually clean it once a week while I'm doing laundry.

Moe: Describe your closet in one word.

Liesl: Small.

Jai, plus size blogger

Jai is a recent Fashion Journalism MFA graduate who loves to blog about fashion for women of all sizes and cultures. Her hope is that, by writing for all women, she can help make fashion a little more inclusive and help women embrace fashion with open arms.

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Jai: My closet is, for the most part, very organized. I have a clothes rack in my room near my computer desk. Then I have shoes on a rack on my door and bookshelf that also doubles as a TV nook.

Moe: What is the most used area of your closet?

Jai: Umm... Definitely the clothes rack. I hope it doesn't fall over anytime soon. *fingerscrossed

Moe: What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Jai: I don't know. There are pieces that I like a lot and wear way too much. I think the gold shirt I bought from H&M + is my favorite right now because it is just so pretty. I can wear it for any occasion. It can be casual or dressy.

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

Jai: I think my vision of the dream closet would be one of those super organized Ikea or California Closets with all of my favorite brands and current clothes lined up all nice and neat by color and season.

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

Jai: I try to do that several times a season. When you put stuff in, you should always take stuff out and give it away to either charity or consignment.

Moe: Describe your closet in one word.

Jai: Interesting

Em - Film Industry / Blogger

Em

Film Industry / Blogger

Em is a fashion blogger over at "Oh The Places You'll Go". The blog has been running for nearly three years and incorporates fashion with an important message about being body confident. Em is originally from Australia, and although she still considers herself Aussie to the core - she now lives in and talks fashion - from London.

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Em: Yes. But this is a new thing! I've had some down-time between contracts recently and did a massive wardrobe overhaul. I cleaned out a lot of pieces I don't wear any more and sold some of the excess, while the majority of it went to Goodwill. I needed to be better organised as well as reassess my wardrobe space! I am proud to say - I now know where everything is - and I've co-ordinated it so I have seasonal sections!!

Moe: What is the most used area of your closet?

Em: The left hand side of my clothes rack! The left side is where I keep all "current" pieces. The dresses I currently love or wear the most are there, it is where I head FIRST in the morning and where everything (currently) gets put away to... I want my wardrobe to be dynamic - but for the sake of being organised - that's my "go to" area!

Moe: What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Em: I have an Anna Scholz dress I love. It is one of the first dresses I bought and because I want it to remain absolutely pristine - I wear it less often than I could. It is a really - WOW dress for me. I put it on and feel great, but also LOOK great IN it. Wearing that dress is like pulling out the "big guns!".

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

Em: Somewhere with room enough for me to stand inside and change. I would want a little table in there for a glass of water/wine and an mp3 player and a lovely full length mirror or two. I'd love to be able to get ready to go out in there - like a "dressing room" or something. The carpet would be long and grey and soft. Clothes everywhere. Wall to wall dresses. A small section for my shirts and trousers. A shelf system for jumpers and jeans and the like. Shoes. Well, a way to organise and display them! When I see someone trying on wedding dresses on TV - in those huge, luxurious spaces - I want a wardrobe like that!

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

Em: Very rarely. It is a big job! Now that I've done it, I don't plan to do it again for ages!

Moe: Describe your closet in one word.

Em: Wonderful!

Moe
Moe

Maureen (Moe) Wood has been the Large and Lovely editor at BellaOnline for over eight years. She has a four year old plus size shopping blog and has been a Squidoo lensmaster for six years. She has a varied background in retail and health care but found her true calling on the web.

Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Moe: For the most part I would say my closet is organized although I do have a few Rubbermaid containers that give me some grief -- one day I will get around to labeling them.

What is the most used area of your closet?

Moe: I have my closet divided into casual and dressy. The casual side definitely gets used the most because I work at home.

What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Moe: My Igigi dresses.

What is your vision of the dream closet?

Moe: Oh my, my dream closet would be a room-sized walk in closet with space for everything in my current closet, Rubbermaids and dressers. I would love to have a wall for shoes (and more shoes to put in the slots). A place to hang all the purses I dream about and my clothing organized so I can actually see what I have at a glance. I would like to have a sitting area for putting on make-up, hose etc. At one end, a floor to ceiling mirror, one of those old ones with the thick heavy scrolled frame. A skylight would be lovely too.

How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

Moe: I am a seasonal cleaner but usually only twice a year. I take everything out, dust off the walls and wash the floor. Then I put everything back in an organized fashion. While I do this I usually set aside pieces to give away to charity.

Describe your closet in one word.

Moe: Limited.

LuAnne

Luanne aka Weesha is the plus size fashion blogger behind Weesha's World. She is extremely passionate about style at every size and budget, fashion makes her feel good and plays a major role in her journey to self acceptance. Luanne is a self confessed shopaholic but has no intentions of seeking rehab any time soon.

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

LuAnne: Hell no! Every time I need to decide what to wear, there are clothes flying into a pile on my bed.

Moe: What is the most used area of your closet?

LuAnne: The shelves get messed up the most because that's where most of my casual clothes are kept.

Moe: What is the most coveted item in your closet?

LuAnne: I have a few, but I guess I would pick my Monif C gown (picture above). I feel like a movie star in that dress!

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

LuAnne: Oh my, I would want two walk in closets haha! One just for shoes and bags, and one for clothes. I envision rows and rows of shoes, and everything would be colour coded. And there would be some kind of security system so that cats and kids can't get in.

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

LuAnne: Not very often, I tried to stick to an organized system but things go flying anyway. I recently put away everything that I hadn't worn in the past six months but it's still a lot of clothes.

Moe: Describe your closet in one word.

LuAnne: Eclectic.

Olivia - Pediatric Nurse / Blogger

Olivia Miles, blogger
Olivia Miles, blogger

Olivia is a plus-fashion blogger from Australia who writes to share her love of pretty clothes and fat-fashion bargains! She loves outfit of the day (OOTD) photos, hogging the karaoke mike, making ballon animals, flirty dresses, moustaches, anything pink and Pearl Jam! She also has a fondness for making up words and using too many bangs and smileys in her blog posts!

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Olivia: I like to think it is organised but more often than not I end up pulling twenty things off the hangers to find what I'm looking for!! I have my everyday wardrobe and then another double rack with things I'm currently wearing on high rotation. I also have (literal) boxes of accessories but the ones I'm loving most now hang on the back of my wardrobe door. Overall it's generally kind-of sorted--for example the dresses are in one place and the tops in another, but really things go wherever they fit!

Moe: What is the most used area of your closet?

Olivia: The dresses!!! I love wearing a dress, they are flirty, feminine and can be re-styled for all the seasons!

Moe: What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Olivia: My City Chic velvet and satin pick-up dress! It's one of those dresses that I put on and instantly feel fabulous in! To me the most important items in my wardrobe are not necessarily the most expensive or rare--it's the ones that make me feel amazing! Another fave is the City Chic Night Mistress dress--only because it sold out so quickly in in the shops and I found one on eBay in my size for a total steal! Clothes always feel even more amazing at a quarter the cost of retail price!

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

Olivia: A giant room or organised clothes! We have just bought our first house and I am in the middle of turning one of the rooms into a fabulous walk-in-robe! So watch this space and I can SHOW you my dream closet soon!

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

Olivia: I clothes swap with quite a few of my girlfriends (a great way to update without spending!), so it gets a good sort through quite often. To be completely honest though--there are a few pieces in there that probably need to be chucked out! I'd love to take a few days off and just play in my wardrobe!

Moe: Describe your closet in one word.

Olivia: Bubbly!

Veronica - Education Consultant / Blogger

Veronica Cid
Veronica Cid

Veronica Cid is a Latina born and raised in Southern California with a love of fashion, food, technology and photography. After several years of trying to find her passion in life, she discovered blogging. In 2009 she started a fashion, beauty and shopping blog for plus size women, called Cid Style File. Blogging started out as a hobby and turned into a passion, where she was able to express her self. Veronica's blog and life motto is "You don't have to sacrifice style because of size or budget." Style has no size or price, fashion is for everyone!

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Veronica: Not organized at all, I try to be but I'm just not wired to be anal about where things go. I am moving next month as well so right now it is messier than normal. I am hoping to start off with a freshly organized closet in my new place, color coded and all.

Moe: What is the most used area of your closet?

Veronica: I have some drawers inside my closet, which are used for my undergarments, those get used every day.

Moe: What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Veronica: Hmm, not sure I have any thing that is coveted, but I would have to say maybe my Jeffery Campbell boots or Betsey Johnson collection. Betsey is my favorite designer and I have a good collection of her bags, jewelry and some shoes.

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

Veronica: My dream closet would be a huge walk in closet, with enough room for all my clothes, shoes, purses and accessories. I would also like to have a space in the closet to have a vanity mirror area where I could put my makeup on. Oh, and it would have air conditioning too!

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

Veronica: Not often enough, but I try to do it at least once a year. I've lost 20lbs since the beginning of the year and am planning to lose more. So I have lots of clothes I need to get rid of, a blog sale is in order!

Moe: Describe your closet in one word.

Nicola - Educational Psychologist / Blogger

Nicola plus size blogger
Nicola plus size blogger

Nicola blogs at 2manycupcakes.com (private blog, you have to be invited). She originally started the blog as a weight loss blog and then decided she was far more obsessed with her clothes than weightloss. However, she thought the name was cute so kept it. She owns an incredibly naughty kitten called Katniss who she is overly obsessed with and who loves to play in her closet. Her day job is an educational psychologist and playing with fashion definitely helps her relax during down time. She also loves it when she wear clothes that the 6 year olds approve of... that's how she knows it's a good outfit!

Moe: Do you consider your closet organized, in other words can you find what you need without ripping it apart?

Nicola: My closet can appear to be organised at times! I have dresses and jumpers in one closet and tops, pants and skirts in my other closet. However, they are both packed so full that it can still be hard to find stuff.

What is the most used area of your closet?

Nicola: Most used is definitely tops and pants because that is my general workwear. I wish it was my dresses :(

What is the most coveted item in your closet?

Nicola: Currently the most coveted item in my closet is my sailor print Hell Bunny dress. Often I will just stand and stare at it. It's also just so super flattering to wear.

Moe: What is your vision of the dream closet?

Nicola: I dream of having one of those colour coordinated, walk in wardrobes where my shoes are all on shelves where I can see them! Definitely Carrie's wardrobe she ends up with in the Sex in the City 2 movie.

Moe: How often do you clean out/organize your closet?

Nicola: Not often enough! Generally every ten weeks when I get a holiday from work because by then it's normally a shambles.

Moe: Describe your closet in one word:

Nicola: Colourful!
