Top 10 Mistakes Bloggers Make
Top 10 Mistakes Bloggers Make - How not to Blog
This Lens will cover the top 10 most common mistakes I find bloggers make.
The are some kinds of bloggers around this blogosphere, but every single type has its mistakes. From the "blogger" who becomes one just dreaming of easy cash to the serious guru Seth Godin-like bloggers nobody is perfect.
For example, I am very much aware of my own flaws, Im not a guru and not close, my writing isnt perfect as Im Portuguese and my English isnt so top notch - but its easier to get outside and notice the flaws of others.
So, maybe if you read this list you will feel identified with some of these mistakes and hopefully turn them around. Im a newbie blogger so I learn everyday. But as a reader, I have lots of experience - Im kinda picky on blogs and stick with a few good ones. I hate those adsense christmas trees sites for example - shows me the kind of blogger I dont want to be. Its very easy to fall for that type for example, but I'll explain more below.
If you think a dire mistake is being made that isn't in the list below just tell me so in the comment section.
1 - Cash Hunting - The Grinding Amazon and Ad sense attempts
Dont quest for profit, quest for traffic
...And real traffic, not automatized traffic or paid one.
Real traffic is the slow and steady way to earn legit and high quality REAL back-links, remember that slow and steady wins the race.
This is a mistake that is increasingly common in the blogosphere.
In the beggining blogs were a rare and personal tool, but since they were rare lots of people read them and the persons that owned them starting to earn from ads, publicity, and affiliate selling etc... So people started saying to themselves: "I want to jump to the bandwagon".
Problem is, they forget they need readers in order to get cash. So what is the best way to get readers? Write something that matters, something that brings value to the market, your market, even if dog owners are your niche - think of them as your market.
There are a vast number of people commiting this mistake, why? - Everyone wants to win money - Im no exception, you're no exception, and so its easy to commit this error. Think of it this way - right now I am not one of the most proeminent bloggers and my lense, since I'm a newb, has a small ammount of traffic. What if I started having alot of traffic in my blog? - I would feel tempted to monetize it, no doubt about that.
This is why you'll have to resist the urge to commit this mistake once you get readers. Remember - nobody likes to feel squeezed off. Your readers will know what you want!
2 - Text Spelling - Grammar errors
Ooooh the irony!!
THIS is my mistake, as I'm a portuguese speaker my english is not the best, I try and I think I make myself understood, but my knowledge in Marketing tells me I'm swimming against the tide - Good that I do this for Passion.
So why is this so important? Credibility.
Think about it, would you rather read this lense written by me or by someone who can actually type? Besides, people that read diagonally - or just read here and there - might think I'm a child or undergraduate speaking. No credibility for me right there - heck, even with the truth explained I loose my credibility for admiting I can't type English - what kind of blogger doesnt rule the english language - I don't and thats why I dont expect to be a famous or sucessfull blogger- meh.
3 - The attention syndrom
Look at me look at me....
Nothing pisses a reader the most than searching for something in the search engine and landing on a page of The Attention Syndrom Guy/Girl.
The ASG (Attention Syndrom Guys) are cocky, and type about themselves - Im on top bloggers of March by *insertsitehere* , Im experienced, Im this and that - or worst, they are the kind of bloggers that think they are smart and make questions like those irritating Vlogs on youtube - like Boxy's. (Im Sorry).
You need readers, and readers want to read about something interesting, not your everyday life, or how you are awesome and cute.
These irritate me almost as hard as the cash hunters.
4 - Lack of Commitment - Lazyness
Ooh, I'll go there tomorrow...
Another frequent mistake, you are excited about a topic, you start a blog, you make 2 posts, even 3 or 4 if you're inspired.
Next day you make another post, skip the day after, make another post on the other day, and you start to feel lazy, or lonely, and you start rationalizing saying its ok if you go there just day *X* , day *X* comes and you're just too busy to go there etc etc...
When you notice, you dont go there for a long time and totally lost the guts or will to go there again. Thats how a blog dies!
If you want to start a blog, know it will cost you time and commitment, you wont be feeling like updating it everyday and it's hard - sorry to drop the bomb - you have to WORK for it to work....
Commitment - Have it, or make static sites, your choice. "Apathy is Death" - Kreya in Star Wars
5 - The Invisible One
The Importance of SEO and Networking
You can have great content and still dont get much visitors, that happens because great contents make visitors come back, subscribe and etc.. but it doesnt make them land on your page.
Its every blogger obligation to learn a bit SEO, at least know how to place keywords, META-tags, and know the importance of another thing - networking.
Get some guest posts, and become a reader of other blogs of your niche - if you think its pertinent leave a link to your site on a comment, but just dont go mindless linkbaiting. Pasting links everywhere is a great way to accomplish nothing and loose credibility.
Learn SEO and Socialize with fellow bloggers, especially prollific and professional ones.
6 - The Wannabe
I dont believe you...
When people start blogging, its normally because they see other bloggers doing it and think it might be fun or profitable, and so they try and copy them. They say stuff they think others would say and forget about their own personality.
A Blogger must have its own "voice". I know if youre serious about blogging that you already listened or read this expression - the blogger's "voice". The voice is the personality that passes to the lines you write - you got to make YOUR personality pass. Put your heart into it and you wont regret it.
The internet is a strong tool because its filled with people's opinions. Different people, different opinions - Be Yourself! Your oppinion must be the next big thing since sliced bread! Also, if you try to be someone that knows of something you dont, you may sound stupid, and people wont believe you,
7- The Anti-Social
"Im not anti-social, I just dont know how to work that..."
You must have heard of this - Social Networks! Facebook, Hi5, Orkut, Twitter... All great tools where information is passing lightning speed. You got to take advantage of social networks. How many times did you share or published any video, image or link on facebook? I'll bet at least one time, but certainly lots more. So, place an option on your blog to share your post on Facebook, Twitter and an option to Digg it.
If your content is good people might share it, comment, like it, and they will act as your greatest spokespersons, promoting your site and getting you traffic.
"But Carreira, I cant work with Facebook, I dont even have an account!!" - Get an account then! If you cant beat them join them. For your blog to progress you have to progress with it.
Dont sit there beeing lazy, move it and do something for yourself!
8 - Tricking or Lying to Readers
You dont think youre going to be famous doing that right?
This is just plain stupid, you are bitting the hand that feeds you.
If you are going to start a blog to promote an affiliate product or a lame service that dont work and you say its the best thing ever youre prone to get into trouble. Play fair. If you are thinking about doing this you shouldn't even be on this lense because you are not welcome.
So, if you are still here, progress to error number 9.
9- The Epilepsy Guy
oOOH SEIZURE COMING!!
Once I visited a blog that had purple letters on black background. After some days I got amazed by a blog with YELLOW letters on brown background. I was almost having my eyes bleeding trying to read the posts.
If you want to be read - make it easy for other people to do it. There is no best way than black on white.
Remember that the design of a blog must make people feel confortable for them to stay. If you have a design that makes people think they took acids without noticing that will just drive away potential readers, and you dont want that!
Sometimes simplicity is for the best...
10 - Giving too much importance to others
Reading this list and abiding for it is a mistake...
The final point of this list is to show you that maybe youre doing a mistake in reading this lense and taking it too serious. These are things I consider to be mistakes. My style of blogging is definitly different than yours, my likes and dislikes are different, my personality is different and our blogger voices differ as well - so the mistakes im speaking about may not apply to you.
Generally I think these are common mistakes, but its what I think. A blogger is a leader of oppinion, so you must decide for yourself and give less credit to others - Be the decider! Be the opinion leader readers want you to be!
On a final notice I just want to apollogize if my english writing made your eyeballs fall. But I have a guestbook bellow that you can use to flame me. :D
