Top Ten Indian celebs I follow on twitter

Updated on February 9, 2013

I joined Twitter in September 2009. Frankly speaking, I didn’t know what to do next in twitter. No followers around. I tried to convince some friends, but no one joined. And randomly I followed Mallika Sherawat, who had joined a couple of month before me. She immediately followed me and I felt encouraged. Since then I kept a close watch on the twitter, and started following some celebrities. Several I have un-followed, and some I am following religiously.

Here is a list of top ten Indian celebrities I follow on the twitter. They are not listed in any particular order.

Amitabh Bachchan, Barkha Dutt, Sonam Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Trisha Krishnan, Shashi Tharoor, Ajit Ranade, Taran Adarsh, Pritish Nandy and lastly my first follower Mallika Sherawat.

I am also preparing a list of celebs I have un-followed in recent times. I will publish them soon.

For now here my list of top ten Indian celebrities to follow on twitter.

He has already got over 2.5 million followers on the twitter now. On an average he adds 6700 followers per day. And he tweets daily with religious regularity.

His tweets are very warm and bring in positive energy. He is the best twitter.

Barkha Dutt (Twitter handle @BDUTT)

With half a million followers, Barkha Dutt is one the best twitter face for India. In March 2012, Time picked Barkha Dutta as one of best twitter feed amongst The 140 Best Twitter Feeds of 2012. Time magazine has described her as Indian Anderson Cooper.

Apart from talking about her programs at NDTV, she also discusses current issues and news. On an average she tweets 18 tweets per day. About 1000 followers join her each day.

Sonam Kapoor (Twitter handle @sonamakapoor)

Sonam Kapoor is one of my favourites. Besides acting, she eats and reads... in that order. She discusses about the books she is reading. Also she talks about her favourite Television shows.

She already has about 1.2 million followers. She is daughter of my favourite actor Anil Kapoor.

Anupam Kher (Twitter handle @AnupamPkher)

Author and actor! He is not only a good actor; he is good author as well. And Anupam Kher tweets are very interesting. In replies he will always add Jai Ho to represent happiness and acknowledgement!

At present he has 648K followers. He tweets count stands at 5600+.

Trisha Krishnan (Twitter handle @trishtrashers)

She is one of my favourite actresses from down South India. Trisha is most popular in Telugu film industry. She started her career in Tamil movies, with her most acclaimed movie being the classic romantic movie “Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa”. She is 4th most followed person in Chennai, India, having 262K followers. On an average she adds 588 followers a day.

By the way, she also has a fake account with handle as @trishatrashers. For sometimes I was following this fake account.

Shashi Tharoor (Twitter handle @ShashiTharoor)

In a very short span of time, he got over a million followers. He was former under-secretary general at United Nations and a former Minister after having won the election in Kerala State. His tweets were sometimes controversial. I am great fan of Shashi and following him for a long time.

He is author, have written a dozen books. He also writes regularly for newspapers and magazines in India. He tweets links to his writings.

At the rate of 900 new followers per day, he already has 1.3 millions followers.

Ajit Ranade (Twitter handle @ajit_ranade)

Ajit Ranade heads the Corporate Economics Cell (CEC) of Aditya Birla Group. In a way, he is my colleague as I too work for a company belonging to Aditya Birla Group.

I started following Ajit Ranade after he appeared in KBC as a guest. I follow him for his views on current affairs. He often tweets links to some important articles of economic interest.

He has a humble 12 thousand followers only. But his 1200+ tweets are worth reading and following!

Taran Adarsh (Twitter handle @taran_adarsh)

I follow him for his views on Indian cinema, specially the Hindi movies. He is hugely respected trade analysts in Hindi film industry today. His views are most respected. He gives unbiased reviews of the movies and predicates Box Office collection on the buzz a movie makes before it is released.

When not writing about movies, he tweets refreshing quotes and super quotes.

His twitter following is nearing 150K mark.

Pritish Nandy (Twitter handle @PritishNandy)

I am fan of Pritish Nandy from the days when he was an editor of Illustrated weekly of India. He is one of the finest journalist and writer. Once he was editor of several news magazines and newspapers concurrently. He ventured into Television and movies. His company has produced several Television programs and several Hindi movies.

His tweets are very thought provoking and he chats on current political scenes. He has nearly 200K followers.

Mallika Sherawat (Twitter handle @MallikaLA)

The very reason why I got addicted to twitter was Mallika Sherawat. After registering with twitter, I didn’t know how to use the twitter. I just followed Mallika and noticed what all she is doing in there. She even replied to one of my tweets, and this made me to think how powerful this twitter is. Celebs can connect to fans with ease, chat and even answer some of the queries of the fans.

Mallika is using twitter to connect to her fan base. Her twitter fan base stands at over half a million, with daily addition of 800+ followers each day. She replied to fans tweets. [please check out my separate article on her here...]

Hope you all will be following these top ten Indian celebrities on the twitter. And to make top Eleven, then you can follow me as well. My twitter handle is @sashameel.

If you want to share your choice of Top Ten Indian Celebrities to follow, then please do include then in the comments column at the end of this article. I would love to increase my celebrities base at the twitter.
