Uninstall Visual Studio (All Versions) - How To Remove Visual Studio 2005, 2008, 2010 Completely Off Your Computer.

Updated on November 29, 2011

Uninstall and Remove Visual Studio from your Computer the Easy Way.

Does following the Official Microsoft uninstall instructions on how to remove Microsoft Visual Studio from your PC, did nothing to help you remove Visual Studio and all it did was confuse you even more ?

Below I'll show you how I came about to remove Visual Studio Completely from my computer using the Visual Studio Uninstaller. The funny thing here is how this clever and unassuming software clearly outsmarts Microsoft (supposedly the biggest software company in the world) at their own game and shows you the easy way to properly remove and totally Uninstall Visual Studio from any computer or laptop.

Thank You Mr Gates for Making "Microsoft Visual Studio" So Damn Hard to Uninstall and Totally Remove from our PC's?

The Top 3 Common Problems Found in Blogs that Everybody seem to be Having with "Visual Studio".

Reason # 1.

Constant error messages.

Reason # 2.

To Uninstall an older version.

Reason # 3.

Slow computer speed.

How to Uninstall Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.

A few months after installing Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 on my desktop, I decided I only wanted to program through Visual Studio from my laptop. I figured uninstalling would be as simple as clicking a few icons and following the uninstall instructions on Windows Vista and that should be piece of cake.

I discovered this to be entirely the opposite. When I tried to uninstall the main application of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition, using the Add/Remove Programs and later the VSTS 2008 installation media, I kept getting the following error dialog box stating: "A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components - Cancelling setup."

The installation would then cancel (as the message display just warned). I tried many options like trying to uninstall the other Visual Studio 2008 related components and reinstalling Visual Studio 2008 to fix any potential problems, and then uninstall. None of these worked either!

After countless hours of searching the various websites and blogs for answers, I discovered that Microsoft has confirmed that Uninstalling Virtual Studio 2008 completely using the maintenance mode supplied with the software seems to be a major problem with 4 of their products versions.

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Academic Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite

If you are like so many people who are sick and tired of putting up with trying to uninstall Visual Studio and want to forcibly remove it from your system, simply Download Perfect Uninstaller and in just a few minutes your computer would be clean of any remnants of Visual Studio.

How To Uninstall "Silverlight" From Your PC

If you tried to open a Microsoft Silverlight Project or any other Silverlight Tools from Visual Studio and you're having problems due to corrupt or missing files, the best way to handle this situation is to uninstall Silverlight completely and then re-install the latest version of Silverlight.

Removed Visual Studio Manually and you Kept on Getting the Same Dialog Box Errors?

This is Definitely NOT Recommended as you Could Do More Harm to Your PC if you Accidentally Delete the Wrong File!

This was the step by step process I followed as I tried to uninstall Visual Studio but to no avail as I kept on getting the same error message time after time...

Each component of Visual Studio must be uninstalled separately as these features were selected during the original Visual Studio setup; a number of additional components were also installed to my computer. These components were:

Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 SP1

1. Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team Explorer.

2. Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Components.

3. Microsoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 .Netframework Tools.

4. Microsoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 Headers and Libraries.

5. Microsoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 SDK Reference Assemblies and Intellisense.

6. Microsoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 Tools.

7. Microsoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 Win32 Tools.

8. MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2008 - ENU.

Each of these components must be uninstalled manually by deleting 1 file at time before rebooting your computer for these changes to take effect. If for some reason, you can't uninstall one or any of the above programs, then try Perfect Uninstaller

Perfect Uninstaller

Perfect Uninstaller will automatically and completely remove Visual Studio from your PC. It will remove every single Visual Studio file that is left behind in your computer registry which the standard Windows "Add/Remove Program and VSTS 2008 installation media" simply cannot do.

Failure to remove Visual Studio & all of its traces, could simply slow your computer right down !

Try Perfect Uninstaller - 100% Risk Free.

I had previously installed the VS2010Pro RC version and had uninstalled it successfully (evidently successfully doesn't mean completely). I then tried to install the full version: Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional. Before the setup even got rolling, I encountered a screen that reported that: Setup had detected the following product(s) currently installed but must be removed. The list below this message is completely empty! What can I do or try now? Any help would be appreciated.

      @anonymous: Hey Richard,

Sorry about the late reply as I've been away all day today...As to the discrepancy in the missing GB's it's because you restored your system quiet a bit lately, so you guessed right and you were spot on about that !

Cheers, and thank you for visiting my lens :)

@jean99 lm: Actually, I used the option in the control panel (Add/Remove programs) to uninstall the program. I had to uninstall each program individually, so I might have missed one or two programs. Still, I don't see how they can occupy 4.4GB alone. I have recently used system restore quite a bit, so could that be the reason behind the loss of space? Thanks for the quick reply and I hope to hear from you.

Hey I have installed Visual Studio 2010 and found that it took more space than it said was required. I decided to uninstall it, and I find myself with much less space than i had before the installation (before I had 24 GB on my HD and now i have 19.6 GB). Could you please tell me why this happened and how to get back the free space.

I installed visual studio 6 on my computer (Windows XP, SP3). The installation was interrupted due to screen whited out. Received error message "Can not find file DAO350.DLL." when open VB6. Received erro message, " unable to load development DLL". Now I neither can uninstall it (since it is not show on Add & remove list) nor can re-install it.

      @anonymous: Hi Sweety,

Thanks for the email. Once you have 'Perfect Uninstaller' fully installed on your computer. Open the program, scroll down all the listed programs that show up on under "Display Name". Select 'Visual Studio' from the list and Click on the "Uninstall" tab (bottom right hand side on the menu)...and within minutes 'Visual Studio' will be totally removed from your PC, it really is that easy.

Cheers and please let me know if you need any more help with uninstalling 'Visual Studio'...

Can't update to final version of Visual Studio 10 because the beta version is still detected. However, the beta version does not show up on the programs list nor can I find any evidence of it. I have removed all references from the registry and all files from the drive pertaining to visual studio 10 beta. The program does not show up in Perfect Uninstall either.

      Hello David,

Thanks for visiting my Lens today. The apps list only contains the most popular programs, that's the reason you do not see "Visual Studio" listed there.

However, you can use the 'Force Uninstall' Tab to uninstall any Software Program that is installed on your computer including "Visual Studio", all you need to do is select the actual program and Click on ‘Force Uninstall’ (2nd Top Left Tab) and in less than 10 minutes time every file and extension that is associated with "Visual Studio" will be totally removed from your computer.

Please feel free to contact me again should you need any assistance on how to uninstall Visual Studio from your computer.

I hope you found my Lens helpful.

Cheers and all the best to you.
