Violin for Beginners: An Introduction

Updated on February 26, 2014

Learning is easier than you think!

Finding information on violin for beginners can seem very overwhelming!  This is exactly what I experienced when I decided to learn how to play the violin myself.

I would find expensive systems all promising to teach me how to play the violin in quickly and easily.  I spend valuable time and money on books which were poorly written and extremely confusing! Sound familiar?

Then, I checked into taking private violin lessons.  I was told I would need to take 1-2 violin lessons a week at $50 each time.  Well, needless to say this was not an option.

After buying a violin and spending money on these books which didn't work, I almost threw in the towel until I finally found a website that gave me the tools I needed to learn to play: .  Within minutes I was playing my first song and finally able to put that violin I'd bought to good use!

What is the proper instrument for starters?

How to pick your first Violin without breaking the bank!

Violins can get EXPENSIVE if you don't know where to look. But when it comes to getting an inexpensive first violin for your child, here is the information you need to know.

There are basically two types of violins: student and professional. The main difference between the two is the time that goes into crafting them. When you first start learning to play, the recommended violin for beginners is the student model.

You can buy your student violin from a local music store, search for one on Craigslist or you may want to check out the deals online from sites like Amazon.com. You'll be surprised at how much cheaper buying a violin online can be!

Once you have your violin and bow you are ready to get started learning. Just as with learning anything new - learning to play the violin requires some dedication and a good teaching program. That is why I was so lucky to stumble on easy violin lessons before I got frustrated with all of the books i used trying to teach myself the violin!

The video system really helps you see exactly where your fingers should go, how you should hold your instrument and how you hold your bow. It was like having an instructor sitting in the same room and for a fraction of the price of what private lessons cost!

Fun Fact

Did you know that there are about 70 pieces which make up a single violin?

Cool, huh?

Choose a Violin from Amazon!

Amazon is a great place to pick up a beginner violin at a discounted rate. Here is a selection that currently is on sale today.

Want to be blown away?? - You too can play like THIS!

Practicing is ESSENTIAL!

My mother used to tell me that practice makes perfect. I never understood how accurate that statement was until I began to learn how to play the violin in my 30's.

Don't get me wrong...the learning part wasn't difficult, it was taking the time each day to make sure I was improving my skills. This was until I really found a learning system that I enjoyed! I found myself excited about practice time and the new lessons I'd learn. Me - ENJOYING practicing? This was the best part.

Who would think that in a matter of a few hours I'd learn all the basics at that I would need to know in order to play. The daily practice and hundreds of instructional violin videos really gave me the tools I needed to begin to play well and gain confidence! After some more practice, I think that I will audition to become a member of our local community orchestra. How fun!

This lens is also very informative about the violin. I don't play any musical instrument. I used to try to play the guitar until I realized that I have no sense of rhythm.

I never even tried to play violin myself but I just got a similar introduction to this wonderful instrument couple of weeks ago by my girlfriend. Funny thing is that she never told me she was learning to play violin as a child so I was quite surprised. I like the sound of violin because it makes me feel confortable and relaxes my mind.

This is great lens for beginners and those who would like to start playing violin - I think I will have to show it to my girlfriend ;)
