Why I went (RED) with my winnings

Updated on January 19, 2014

Hey everyone! Well if you are a Squid like me, you may know I won the IMMINENT prize draw! Yay and yippeee!! I never win anything so to have this win tied in some way to my writing was extra fabulous. I am always humbled by the quality of writing from Giant Squids around me, so to even have had a chance to be in the draw with a few tickets in hand was amazing! Seriously you guys, you are my heroes.

Ok, enough gushing, you'll be saying by now. So some of you have asked me what prize I chose. I wanted to wait until I had a thoughtful moment to write about it, because it is worthy of some deep thought. It is not every day you get a prize handed to you, and I wanted it to be meaningful in all kinds of ways.

First of all, I think maybe because I am not in the USA, I was gifted cash instead of choosing a prize. But had I chosen, the Apple prize was what I would have taken. So in the spirit of the original prize, I did purchase some Apple products. Although it felt a bit like a spending spree, (and I guess it was because I usually don't spend money on anything!!), I waited and did some research and put some thought into what I was doing and how I would spend the money.

I am in school right now learning how to make apps for Apple platforms, so it seemed a wise thing to purchase some Apple products that can actually run apps, as we don't own a cell phone. I guess I could have actually bought an iPhone, but when it came right down to it, we don't want one. So instead I bought this iPod Touch as well as an iPad Mini, so not only can I see what apps are out there, and try a few out, I can also use the devices to test the apps I make, before they hit the store.

I chose (PRODUCT)RED items, because partial proceeds benefit the AIDs campaign, and as musicians we have always been supporters of Bono's campaigns. It was important to me to at the very least, give back in some way with my huge purchase!

I also bought something similar to this, which was also a (PRODUCT) RED product (but did not come with a pen - that's cool!)

A bit more about Bono's project the (RED) campaign.

With the remainder of the money, well I've had my fun and the rest is in the bank and will be going towards the dental work I have to have finished this year, it will just cover 4 crowns - so thank you Squidoo!;-)

BUT!! In the spirit of Squidoo and everybody's love to give, I want to give a bit back to the charity of your choice! Add a comment with the name of your favourite registered charity and I'll do a draw and make a donation to the winning charity. *Note Kiva may be a cool idea - I could donate in the name of the Giant Squids! If you want this choice, vote for Kiva!

Thanks again everybody, the prize was made extra special by all of your kind comments!

Update! So after careful consideration, we decided to donate to Greenpeace. We went back and forth between a few themes, health, education etc, but what it came down to, was that if there is no healthy ocean, there is no life period. Thank you again everybody! ;-)

Congratulations on your win. It is interesting reading how you chose to spend your winnings and I think any charity you choose to share a bit with is just a special way of saying thanks. Great for your karma too! :)
