Fun Games to Play with YouTube When You Are Bored

Updated on August 15, 2015

It's happening again. You are sitting in front of the computer with no idea what to do to entertain yourself. The boredom is starting to creep through your brain.

You kinda want to watch YouTube videos, but you can't ever seem to find enough interesting videos to keep you occupied.

Just clicking around on YouTube until you find something interesting isn't very productive. Add structure to your surfing with these YouTube games guaranteed to cure that brain-rotting boredom that comes from clicking without a purpose.

Below are some games to guide your video searching such as Ironman YouTube, Viral Tube, and Follow the Suggestions. And did you know there are actual interactive games to play on YouTube as well?

Whether solo or with a group of friends, young and old alike can now goof off watching YouTube without being aimless. Think of how much more effective you will be at wasting time.

What are you waiting for? Scroll on down and get cracking on the video hilarity.

Do you have what it takes to win the game?

Flex your YouTube muscles.
Flex your YouTube muscles.

Ironman YouTube

One mind-numbingly boring night my husband and his friends invented a game they call Ironman YouTube. The game saved them from their boredom that night and many nights since then. You too can have the cure for boredom by following these easy steps.

It is like a game of last man standing using YouTube. The rules are pretty simple and you can create your own variation.

The Original Version

Each person says a random word or phrase and types it into the YouTube search. Then you play the first video in the search results. You must watch the video all the way to the end.

When the video is finished the next person types in a phrase and plays the first video in the results.

Keep doing this until everyone has had a turn to pick a phrase. Then start back over with the first person.

How does a person win the game, you ask? Here's where the last man standing comes into the game - you never know what kind of a video you are going to get with your random phrase.

Sometimes you find gems that are funny or amazing. Sometimes the videos are weird.

For example, I picked the words "spaghetti socks" and the video below was the first result. It is a video of a cat trying to eat spaghetti noodles.

First result for the search "spaghetti socks."

It is a cute cat that tries to pick up the noddles with its paws and flings the noodles. It is only 30 seconds, so it is a rare gem that is actually fun to watch.

But sometimes you find videos on YouTube so excruciatingly bad you just can't stand to watch them for fear that your brain will shrivel up and hemorrhage. That's where the Iron Man part comes in. There was a video a bit further down the list that was 7 minutes of a guy sticking his feet in spaghetti and playing with it. Watching the first minute of the spaghetti feet video isn't too bad. It's gross and strange. But watching it for 6 more minutes is rough.

Sadly, there is a large population of this type of video on YouTube. Just think of all the people who are recording their random thoughts for 40 minutes or the cat chasing a piece of lint for 6 hours or the people who think they are great dancers. Picture the auditions for American Idol that were too horrific to put on television. That is the kind of things that are uploaded onto YouTube in the highest quantity.

When someone can't stand the pain of watching the video anymore, he can fold and turn away from the pain to spare his eyes. Anyone who turns his attention away from the video is disqualified.

Keep watching until all but one person has cried "Uncle." The last person left watching is declared the Ironman or Ironwoman.

(This is the die hard version. Look below for another way to play.)

YouTube Lols

You never know what you will find on YouTube.
You never know what you will find on YouTube.

Additional Rules and Things to Remember

  • You can put a time limit on the videos you watch. 10 minutes is a good cut off. Skip longer ones.
  • You can also skip music videos and slideshows.
  • Remember - YouTube is very dynamic. The results change daily and fluctuate because of new videos being uploaded or things becoming more or less popular. The phrase you typed in yesterday may not give the same results today.

Variation on the Game

Instead of playing last man standing, you can go one round of everyone picking a phrase. Then vote for the person who discovered the best, worst, funniest, or strangest video. Each vote counts as a point. The person with the most points is the winner for the round.

Play multiple rounds and keep score. The person with the highest number of points at the end is the crowned champion of Ironman YouTube.

This can keep the game from going on way too long and to give the game more excitement than everyone just trying to pick bad videos.

Fighting cats leads to a cat fighting with a squirrel and then to a cat fail and then to cat magic and another cat magic and then back to the beginning. Phew.

Follow the Suggestions

One awesome feature of YouTube is the suggestions queue on the right side of the video. A simple YouTube surfing game to play is to follow the top suggestion.

Just watch a video to begin, then click on the top suggested video. You may want to skip the ones that are promoted videos (usually highlighted in yellow). They typically aren't as good as the others. You should skip playlists as well.

Once the second video has played, click the next top suggested video. And so on until you make a full circle and come back to the original video or a video you have already seen.

For example I typed "jinx cat" into the search. I got the video "Cat vs Kitten (Ernie vs Jinx)." The top suggestion was "Cat vs Squirrel!," which led to "Cat Fall Fail!" Following the suggestion on that video I got "Vanishing Cat Magic Trick." Eerily, the top video was another "Vanishing Cat Magic Trick" completely different from the first. And then the magic was over because that video suggested I watch "Cat vs Kitten (Ernie vs Jinx)," the original video. Check out the picture at the side for a visual.

Some circles will be small. You may only have to watch a few videos to get to the original. Some circles can go on for hours with a different top video every time. (Cheat code: You don't have to watch the whole video in order to click on the suggestions. If the video is a dud, click yourself on outta there).

If you are YouTubing with friends or random people who happen to be gathered around your computer, compete to see who can create the longest chain of top suggested videos without any repeats.

The suggested videos can be very different from what your beginning video was, sometimes in hilarious ways. The person who ends up with the most random suggestions should also get game points if you want to keep score.

Follow this game suggestion and you'll be clicking your way to a fun time.

Viral Tube

Sometimes you just want to waste some time watching videos while leaving your brain in neutral. Making surfing into a game can be just too much effort, but you can't seem to find any interesting videos.

No problem. The solution is to jump on the bandwagon and let the in crowd tell you what to watch.

This is the Viral Videos Game. You can watch the videos with the most views and the videos that are trending now by checking out the charts. These are the videos that are spreading all over the internet (hence the name viral).

Just go through the list watching the ones that look appealing or start picking random numbers. Watch videos 23, 56, and 98 on the list. If more than one person is watching, take turns picking random numbers.

You can even pick certain categories of popular videos to watch. Take turns picking categories if you aren't the only vegetable around.

You can make your viewing interesting without too much effort by catching what everyone else is spreading across the web.

Actual YouTube Games

Did you know that there actual interactive games to play on YouTube? Yup, it's true.

Most of the games are videos that have links embedded into them. When you click a link to make a choice in the game, it sends you to another video that shows the results of what you chose.

There are interactive adventures that are the live version of choose your own adventure books. You can even find magic tricks and card tricks, spelling bees, trivia games, and interactive maps.

Type in interactive videos or interactive games in the YouTube search to start watching (and playing).

My favorites are Chad, Matt and Rob interactive adventures and Bboy Joker, which you can try out below. It is an interactive breakdance competition between Batman and Joker. If you click to interact with the video, it will take you to other segments of the game.

Interactive Batman Dance Game

Zombie Adventure

This is another fun interactive adventure video. It's about zombies and pizza. Choose wisely and don't lose the toppings.

Snake Game

Snake Game on YouTube

Guess what? There is also a hidden snake game Easter Egg on YouTube. You can play it while watching videos or with the video paused.

The game can be accessed on videos done with the new YouTube player. While watching a video, click on the video itself. Then hold down the left arrow key for a few seconds. Immediately hit either the up or down arrow key to keep the snake from dying.

The snake moves pretty quickly and it is hard to see over some of the videos. Try it while watching a video that is dark. Type in "snake game on YouTube" and you will get video results that are just black screens so that playing the game is easier.

You can pause and unpause the video with the space bar while you are playing the snake game. Move the snake so that it eats the blinking dots. He will grow as you do.

Now you can entertain yourself while videos are loading. No more fun lag while waiting on buffering. Score!

Make Your Own Videos

Not satisfied with YouTube as a spectator sport? Get into the game yourself then by making your own videos. Watching videos is not as much fun as creating them.

Come up with a corny song or a skit. Invent a new dance move. Show the weirdest things in your house. Make a short film. Create your own viral video.

All you need is a video camera. Many smartphones will let you upload video you take straight to YouTube.

Your turn to be master of the game. Action!

I love this Hub. For years I've amused myself by opening my "Great Rock Discography" which lists over 1,000 artists and groups and picking two names at random. I then put the name of the first act (say, Guns N’ Roses) into the search box, picking the first video on the list and trying to get to the second act (say, Public Enemy) by means of the suggestions. Guns N’ Roses to Public Enemy is possible because I did it yesterday in 27 moves via such artists as Queen, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and 2pac among others. Unfortunately the rise and rise of Vevo has stopped making this much fun anymore.

But now I have a new game! “Ironman YouTube”. Sounds like I should join your hubby and his mates for a beer or two. I’m obviously anal enough!

      Voted up and sharing.
