What is YouTube's One Channel Layout?

YouTube One Channel is the new layout that was implemented in March 2013. One of the main purposes of this new layout is to increase subscribership by making a first good impression.

One of the main features of One Channel is to accommodate your YouTube channel to be able to be seamlessly viewed on various types of screens, like TVs, computers, tablets, and smartphones.

This new YouTube layout is available to all YT users and allows channel customization. Users can upload a personalized banner which allows them to brand themselves, products, or services. You can upload a trailer for non-subscribers as a way to increase your subscriptions. And finally, you can organize your YT channel by strategically placing your videos and playlists in customizable sections.

I've had a chance to explore this new layout and have created my own personalized banner, organized my videos and playlist, and uploaded my non-subscriber trailer. On this web page, you will learn more about YouTube One Channel, learn how to create your own YT banner via video tutorials, and see how to leverage from these changes. You will also find all the specifications for the new banner.

YouTube One Channel Layout Overview

As mentioned earlier, One Channel is YouTube's new layout implemented in March 2013. The above screenshot is what my YT channel looks like after upgrading to it and uploading my personalized banner.

Please note that I've made many changes since I last created this review, so you my YT channel may look different from how it appears here. Essentially, there are three main features of the new One Channel layout and design:

One Channel Banner: allows users to have a customized header at the top in order to personalize your YT channel in terms of branding. The new banner is designed to work on multiple screens including TVs, computers, tablets, and smartphones. Refer to the One Channel Banner Specifications on how to design your own banner. You will also find a video below to show you how to create your personalized banner.

Trailer for Non-Subscribers: is a new feature that allows users to create a brief trailer which will be played only to non-subscribers of your YT channel. This trailer is a great way to attract new subscribers by showcasing yourself and your work in a short and sweet video which is played as soon as new people land on your YouTube channel. Regular subscribers of your channel will not see this video, unless of course, you set your main page to display this same trailer.

Organizing Content: with the new layout is another feature. Now users can showcase their videos and playlists the way they want them to appear on their channel. If you create videos on various topics, this new organization tool allows you to curate your videos in neat sections. Also, you can curate content from other YT users and display it on your channel in the form of playlists or sections of videos.

Since YouTube implemented this new layout, I've seen some users complaining about the change. Personally, I like the new layout, though it's not perfect, and I think it's a step in the right direction. If you take the time to set it up properly, you will find it beneficial. I'm sure they will be monitoring the progress of this project and making necessary changes to make it better.

This is a close-up look of my YouTube One Channel banner. This is how it would display on a computer screen. The avatar to the top-left of the banner automatically displays from my Google+ profile. You can also display up to four icons (with links) of your social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, etc. And finally, you can display a live link to one of your websites (see the bottom-right of the banner).

YouTube has set specifications for the One Channel banner, in order to ensure that your YT banner shows up correctly on screens of various types of devices like TVs, computers, tablets, and smartphones. I created the above banner for my YT channel and have overlaid it with the art specifications.

For best display results on all screens, YT recommends using a banner image sized 2560 x 1440 pixels. They decided to use this big size given that many people are already using smart TVs, with high resolution displays, to consume internet video. For computers, tablets and smartphones, only the middle section of the banner will display. On computers, the maximum banner size that will be displayed is 2560 x 423 pixels; for tablets, the maximum size is 1855 x 423 pixels; and for smartphones it is 1546 x 423 pixels.

The "safe area" of the above template is the 1546 x 423 area highlighted with the black-lined rectangle. This are will be visible at all times and this is the place where you could place your main artwork of your YT banner.

There are many ways to create the YouTube One Channel banner like using Photoshop, or online applications like Pixlr Online Photo Editor. I created my YT banner using a photo application called Picture Collage Maker. You can check the video tutorial further down this page to see how I created my banner.

Video: How to Upgrade to YouTube One Channel Layout?

This is a brief video tutorial that walks you through the process of upgrading to the new One Channel layout. At the end of the video you can see how I created the above mentioned banner for my YouTube channel. I used Picture Collage Maker to create my YT banner, but you can use Photoshop, if you use it.

How to Create a One Channel YouTube Banner?

The video tutorial below shows you how to create a One Channel YouTube banner for your YT account. I created my banner using Picture Collage Maker. It's a versatile desktop program that I've used for a few years to create collages, posters, greeting cards, photo effects, and banners. This video walks you through the step-by-step process I used to create my YouTube banner that you've seen earlier. You can also create these banners using Photoshop, see the next section below for a Photoshop video tutorial.
