Five Places to Visit in Upstate New York

Updated on April 3, 2019

Upstate New York: The Other New York

Since I have lived in Upstate New York my whole entire life, I have been given the delightful opportunity to fully explore everything that the bountiful area could offer! If your interests include wine drinking, hiking or camping, nature walking, or shopping, Upstate New York might be the optimal place to visit next summer vacation. New York has plenty to offer, both for the adult visitors who want to explore the Finger Lakes Wine Trails, and for the children who want to go on the ginormous "Superman" rollercoaster that can be found at Darien Lake. My hopes are that by the end of this article, you as the reader, will truly be able to soak up the beauty and excitement that my home area has to offer to all those to visit!

The Finger lakes are famous for the wineries that surround the beautiful bodies of water.

1. The Beautiful Finger lakes

Whether you are a world-renowned wine taster, or an outdoorsman, the Finger Lakes might be for you! The Finger Lakes is composed of some of the most famous wine trails that travel around many of the lakes through famous cities such as Syracuse and Ithaca. Besides wineries, the Finger Lakes also includes many hard cider distribution facilities, as well as, breweries that contain hundreds of different flavors of beer.

Along the finger lakes are also some of the most breath-taking nature trails that you can't find anywhere else on the west coast. Buttermilk Falls, Watkins Glen, Taughannock Falls, you name it! These areas are perfect for a nice sunny day out with the family for a picnic and more outdoor activities than you can imagine! Personally, I take advantage of the multiple fishing spots within the finger lakes so I can feast on the perch, bullhead, trout, and plenty of other fish that swim through the vast area.

Niagara Falls borders both New York and Canada. It is one of the largest waterfalls in the entire world!

2. Niagara Falls

No passport? No problem! Within Upstate New York, you are able to soak in the beautiful sight of Niagara Falls without having to cross the Canadian border. Having been to Niagara Falls several times, I can tell you that it is, by far, one of the most romantic places to take your significant other out for your anniversary. Niagara Falls offers boat tours, plenty of look out points, and restaurants to eat at after long hours of exploring the scenic area.

The beauty of Niagara Falls is most apparent during the summer months, when the flowers and nature around the falls is in full bloom. A trip to Niagara falls is a trip that you won't regret!

3. The Adirondacks

You will never truly be one with nature until you visit the Adirondack Mountains. The mountains that range as high as 5,344 feet, can be found all along Upstate New York and are considered the optimal place for fishing, campus, and anything that involves environmental recreations. Along with the mountains, are museums, education centers, and state parks that will keep you busy for hours on end. This provides not only an exciting experience for children, but also an educational one. I have been to the Adirondack Mountains once as a child and I will never forget the experiences that I had while I was up there. Activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, hunting, and of course hiking can all be pursued within the vast mountains.

4. 1000 Islands and Boldt Castle

Along the border between Canada and New York are islands that come in all shapes and sizes and is a must see for anyone visiting Upstate New York. The history behind Boldt Castle is that a wealthy man was building this castle to surprise his wife, but when she died unexpectedly, he decided not to finish the beautifully historic castle. The castle is now on display for the public to see, and provides a blast from the past on how people from his time lived day to day. The 1000 Islands resort area has multiple log cabins on the shore for any overnight visitors. Along with the beautifully crafted houses, are tours and activities that allow you to relax and take in all the history that Upstate New York has to offer. Boat rides are offered to show you the hundreds of islands that cover the land, and all you need to do is sit back and relax!

5. Saratoga Springs

The final place that I want to bring to light is the Saratoga Springs city. Within Saratoga springs are resources that would appeal to any adult's eye. The reason I say this is because, Saratoga offers professional massages in some of the most famous spas and saunas in all of Upstate New York. A weekend away from the kids might be perfect if you take a trip down to Saratoga Springs! Spas not your thing? Not a problem! The historic city offers many museums such as the United States Military Museum, as well as, major historic sights from United States history. Tours are always offered for any type of historical interest at Saratoga Springs.

Finally, Saratoga is very popular for its gambling scene due to its vast majority of racetracks and casinos. While you are out having a great time, the children could also be playing mini-golf that is vastly offered in Saratoga, New York. There is an endless amount of fun and relaxation for everyone in the family!

You won't regret it!

As I have said hundreds of times, Upstate New York has endless activities to offer for all interests! Hopefully, on your next vacation you will be able to open your eyes and see the beauty of this wonderful state!

Great Hub! Down here in Jersey, we kinda have the same problem. Everyone thinks of Jersey as the shore. I've been up to Niagara and the finger lakes, and they are both beautiful! Thanks for all the info!
