The Grand Canyon

This monumental awe-inspiring plateau is a must see on anyone's hit list of a lifetime of to-dos and adventures. Located in Arizona, the Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and reaches a depth of over a mile (6,000 feet / 1,800 metres). Since the estimated time of at least 17 million years ago, the Colorado River continues to erode the form of the canyon to it's present configuration.

Layered with various rock formations, the cliffs are bedded with Kaibab Limestone particularly on the north side. This limestone covers what is known as Conconino Sandstone. The sandstone, usually white in color, consists of fine quartz grains, with minor amounts of potassium feldspar grains deposited by eolian processes (wind erosion).

In keeping with just some of those fine facts, my company and I had the pleasure visiting this amazing tourist destination in the middle of winter (first week in January). Although I'd visit again over the spring, summer or autum months, it was a real treat to stay the night in one of the finer Grand Canyon Lodges, the El Tovar - Kachina Lodge.

Although we did not have the luxury of an abyss Overlook Mule Ride or a helicopter experience, we had the devine pleasure of simply awaking at the crack of dawn to engage in this spectacular opulant visual in its utmost beauty under varying light of the sun. I've provided some images depicting just that! So please feel free to browse through them.!

I definitely recommend the opportunity to visit at least once should you get the chance!

Explore with the Amazon Search - You can try this with just a keyword or phrase!

I'd like to start with digital ~ try GoPro cameras! Although any camera is essential, you just have to take one of these on your trip especially to the Grand Canyon!

The best time I think is now....spring....it's not too hot and the summer crowd's yet to arrive to.

For me, summer's better. I'd rather be too hot than too cold. :)

I live in Southern Az for us anytime is a great time to visit. The summer temps are amazing! (I believe it's at least 20-30 degrees cooler) In the winter it's our chance to get out and play in the SNOW. Which we rarely see! The rest of the year is just simply gorgeous!
