Chandigarh also known as 'The City Beautiful' is a Union Territory in India and serves as the capital of Punjab & Haryana. It is the first planned city of India and is well-known internationally for its architecture & design. The city was planned and designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier.

The wide roads in Chandigarh are surrounded by trees and it has the third highest forest cover in India. The city is one of the cleanest cities in India and is known for its beautiful gardens and serene beauty. Here is a list of must-see places when you visit Chandigarh:

Sukhna Lake

Sukhna lake is an artificial lake near the Rock Garden at the foothills of Shivalik. It was created by damming the seasonal stream, Sukhna Choe coming down from the Shivalik Hills. This 3-km lake is Le Corbusier's greatest gift to the city. No motor boats are allowed in the lake to preserve the serene atmosphere. It is a popular spot among tourists and the natives alike. People can be seen coming here for long walks along the lake. It is also a venue for many festivities.

Rock Garden

Rock Garden is the pride of Chandigarh which is situated near the Sukhna lake. This man-made wonder was created by Sh. NekChand using waste materials. This internationally acclaimed garden has numerous sculptures made by using a variety of different discarded waste materials like frames, mudguards, forks, handle bars, metal wires, play marbles, porcelain, auto parts, broken bangles etc. NekChand ji worked secretly for years in this then secluded forest area before it was discovered.

Rose Garden

Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is another popular tourist hub in the city which is situated in sector 16 in about forty acres. It is famous for nearly 825 varieties of roses and more than 32,500 varieties of other medicinal plants and trees. The Annual Rose Festival called Festival of Gardens is a much awaited cultural event in the city.

Leisure Valley

Leisure Valley is a linear park which is spread over 8 kms stretch and consists of many theme parks, botanical gardens and green belts.

Capitol Complex

The Capitol Complex comprises of three buildings — Legislative Assembly, Secretriat and High Court. Palace of Assembly which is a legislative assembly designed by noted architect Le Corbusier is the attraction of the place.

Open hand monument

It is a symbolic structure which is the emblem of the Government of Chandigarh and symbolizes "the hand to give and the hand to take; peace and prosperity, and the unity of mankind". Designed by Le Corbusier, it stands 26 metres (85 ft) high.

Le Corbusier Centre

Le Corbusier Centre has been set up at the old office of the city's architect Le Corbusier in Sector 19.The centre displays the arts and works by the noted architect.

International Doll Museum

International Doll Museum is a major tourist attraction of the city. As many as 300 different kinds of dolls from various countries like Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Korea and Russia, are displayed in the museum which is a visual delight for kids.

Government Museum and Art Gallery

The Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh is one of the premier museums of India with a very rich collection of Gandharan sculptures, Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings. One can also have a glimpse of the original documents pertaining to the planning and evolution of the city and also of some rare plans, sketches and relevant photographs prepared by Le Corbusier.

ChattBir Zoo

ChattBir Zoo is a zoological park situated close to Zirakpur, in proximity of Chandigarh and is famous for its large number of variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. The lion safari is the most interesting part about the Chattbir Zoo.

The truthfulness of materials of constructions, concrete, bricks and stone, shall be maintained in all buildings constructed or to be constructed. The seed of Chandigarh is well sown. It is for the citizens to see that the tree flourishes.

Chandigarh looks lovely. I think I would probably be stuck in the Rose Garden. lol.... I mean 825 different types of roses! I can smell that beauty now. The International Doll Museum would also peak my interest. And I love going to the zoo, I would make a stop in there for sure. Great Hub!
