15 most beautiful cities in the world

Updated on April 24, 2013

Which are the most beautiful cities in the world?

Our beautiful planet has so many wonderful and amazing things, from oceans, animals, all kind of people to mesmerizing beaches, mountains, untouched nature, cities. This is a list of 15 most beautiful cities, but cities which I would love to visit and cities which I find the most attractive and fascinating. I have visited from this list only Amsterdam, but hopefully I will get a chance to visit more of them, or maybe all of them , who knows.

Culture, history, people, architecture are just some of the specifications I put in description of these places. I chose cities from all around the world. I tried to make the list as diverse as possible. My mother used to travel a lot, so she gave me some information on some of these places.

Please feel free to share with us your experience. I believe that most people love to travel and to see some new and beautiful places, and of course to learn something new. This world has so many untold stories and mysteries. At least we can try is to participate in it in some way, and maybe contribute.

Just a short question before you start your journey through the most beautiful cities in the world!

Where do you live?

See results

1.Tokyo - History, tradition and modern technology

I have always been fascinated with Japan, with their culture, history and tradition. People from Japan have a very strong sense of honor and pride. They are hard working people, with a lot of discipline and strength. A lot of bad things happened to Japan in last few years. Most recent was that devastating earthquake which had taken so many lives and caused enormous damage on infrastructure. But these brave people recovered in such a short time and continued with their lives saying that it was all from God, that it was supposed to be like that. There was no panic, they were so calm and strong. I must say I am fascinated with that.

Tokyo is the capital of Japan and is located on island of Honshu. As a capital Tokyo was established in 1943. Tokyo is very important for global economy. It is one of the three most important economic places in the world along with New York and London.

The main reason I would love to go to Tokyo is to visit the headquarters of Square enix. I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and it would be so great to get a chance to visit this city and to have a chance to see where the whole Final Fantasy story begun.

In Tokyo is located the Emperors palace. It is one of the most populat tourist attractions. It is located in city centre. Another touristic attraction is Sensoji temple. Sensoji temple is a Buddhist town, also reffered to as Asakusa Temple. Shibuya is the main shopping area with many restaurants located on Shibuya station. There is also Disneyland in Tokyo which is very specific because it is located near sea and it has DisneySea.

If you visit this city you will experience many unforgettable moments.

2.Florence - The most beautiful city in Italy

Florence is Renaissance jewel in the heart of Italy. This beautiful city once was a capital of the Kingdom of Italy. Florence has many monuments and amazing architecture that must be seen. It is one of the most interesting cities to visit. If you are a genuine art lover you must visit this beautiful city. UNESCO estimates that nearly 60% of the world's heritage of art is located in Italy, and more than half of it is actually located in Florence.

It is best known for its cathedral, the Duomo, its dome and the Medici family. This cathedral is among ten most longest churches in Europe. Here is a short list of things you shouldn't miss when you go to Florence.

Duomo is a tredemark of the city, I have mentioned it above. Santa Croce is a beautiful Gothic basilica which has frescoes of Giotto and others. Besides the cathedral, there are two more buildings next to it. The first is the tower, built by Giotto and the second building is the octagonal Baptistery of St. John, one of the oldest buildings in Florence.

Uffizi is one of the oldest museums in the world. It has the world's greatest collection of Italian Renaissance paintings. Villa Medici - you must see homes of important Florentine families. Chianti are the most famous vineyards in the country. Church Santa Maria Novella is one of the most beautiful city buildings with wonderful Renaissance frescoes. Fiesole is a little city on the hill from where you can see Florence in all its beauty. You should also visit Boboli Gardens, San Miniato al Monte, Palazzo Pitti and many more amazing and beautiful places located in the Florence.

3. London - City with the oldest subway in the world

My friend visited London couple of years ago and she told me that this is one of the most beautiful and most expensive cities in the world. So I did some research and I have discovered that London is very expensive. But that doesn't represent an obstacle for people to go there and visit this royal city.

Royal attractions in London are most definitely Buckingham Palace, The Queen's gallery, Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral. There is also Windsor Castle, Sandringham estate, Kensington Palace. Buckingham Palace is the official royal residence of Queen Elizabeth, and as such is the most important landmark in London. In 17th century, it was an ordinary town house, but over time it has grown to the luxurious residences with 775 rooms including 52 royal and guest bedrooms and 78 bathrooms. Despite the luxury furniture and works of art, the palace remained working palace and center of the British monarchy. The palace is open to visitors only in summer.

One of the best things in London is that the entrance to some of the best museums and galleries is free. Tate Modern and Tate Britain are remarkable art galleries that display some of the finest art in the world. Tate Modern includes modern art while Tate Britain displays British art from the sixteenth century to the present. Other major art galleries in London are the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square.

4. Amsterdam - City where everything is allowed

I have been to Amsterdam twice, in 2011 and in 2012. It has beautiful architecture. It reminds me a bit of Venice, because the whole city is connected with small bridges. Amsterdam is on river Amstel, and you mustn't miss tour through that river to see all the monuments of Amsterdam. I visited Amsterdam in January, unfortunately. I heard that the most beautiful period to visit Holland is in May when the flowers bloom. Next time I go, I will most definitely go in that period.

I visited Madam Tussaude museum and the Queen's palace. There is also Ana Frank's house and Van Gogh museum. Also there are those famous Red district streets. My brother especially enjoyed there. We were ice skating on the river, it was very cold and the river was frozen. Amsterdam is a perfect combination of modern and old. I think that this city is highly appreciated by architecture lovers. And I mustn't forget the bicycles. Bicycles are everywhere literally. And I loved that. So much fun. So many people from all around the world.

The thing that really fascinated me above everything is the architecture. I just love their lovely houses. You can see houses which are standing crooked, like they will fall down. I almost forgot the windmills. They are everywhere, across whole Holland are windmills in all kind of sizes and designs.

5. Paris - City of lights, love and fashion

Paris is a city of love, romance, lights, art, fashion. Paris is a city of Eiffel Tower. I think that Eiffel Tower is the most famous mark of Paris. When you get on top of it there is amazing view of the city. This iron tower was built near the river Seine on the Champ de Mars. I think that most of us have heard of Louvre, Avenue des Champs- Elysees and Notre Dame. These are besides Eiffel Tower, trademarks of Paris and France.

I have heard that the best time to visit France is in April. In that period the weather is perfect for staying outside whole day long, and there are a lot of events at that time. Architectural monuments and the entire atmosphere make Paris the most visited capital city in the world, the favorite destination of many tourists.

The Louvre is one of the most visited museums in the world, located in one of Paris's historical monuments, the Palais du Louvre, on the right bank of the Seine. The time spent in Paris would not be complete without a visit to one of the great gardens. The street named Rue de L'Anncienne-Comedie, is the oldest paved street in Paris with the original stone, which is still in place. When you stand at the very entrance to the street, you can almost see and hear the horse-drawn carriages. The oldest restaurant in Paris is in this street, La Procope, if you are an ardent admirer of history, this is the place for you. Opened in 1686, and is known for some of its known and unknown visitors, Benjamin Franklyn, Voltaire, Oscar Wilde and Victor Hugo.

6. Dubrovnik - History, architecture and beautiful sea

I have never visited Dubrovnik and it is one of my greatest wishes. This city has always fascinated me. This city has a long history, amazing architecture and beautiful beaches. Stradun is the most famous part of the city where you can go for long walks and enjoy the architecture. The city walls are the main attraction in Dubrovnik and a dominant symbol of the city. There is also The Rector's Palace, Sponza Palace, Dominican Convent and many other historical buildings.

What Dubrovnik also has are the beaches. Most popular beaches in Dubrovnik are Banje, Lapad beach and Copacabana beach. So this is a place which you should visit. It has everything, history, cathedrals and churches, city walls which hide a lot of secrets from the past and of course there are amazing beaches. There is no reason not to visit this beautiful city.

7. Dubai - City of skyscrapers, exclusive hotels and shopping centers

Me and my boyfriend, soon to be husband, have decided not to make wedding party. Instead of that we want to go to Dubai for our honeymoon. Dubai is rather expensive, I have checked some options and I must say it is rather pricy but it is worth every dime. Because of Standard's large and luxury, visitors are able to experience exotic Arabia in the bustling streets or at night under a Bedouin tent with belly dancers under the desert sky.

Dubai is a place of modern and ancient, traditional. From desert oases and beautiful beaches, camel races and old windmills, to the top shopping centers. One of the top attractions is the shopping. Here you can find an incredibly large number of world brand names at low prices from Japanese technique to Parisian wardrobe.

Things you should visit are Amara Spa, Burj Khalifa, Dolphin Bay in Atlantis, Dubai Fountains, Burj el Arab - The Tower of Arabs. Burj Al Arab is the upscale hotel whose construction began in 1994, modeled on Dou, an Arab ship. Building of this magnificent hotel was ordered by Zaid Ben Sultan. This is a trademark of Dubai. Dolphin Bay is one the biggest and highly equipped habitats for dolphins.

Luxury hotels, long sandy beaches, bazaars, shopping centers, entertainment and the miracles of modern architecture are what attracts more and more tourists from all over the world.

8. New York - Empire State Building, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Times Square

What can I say about New York that you already don't know. The first thing that many immigrants have seen in the early 20th century prior to touching American soil was the Statue of Liberty - the symbol of America and the most famous image of New York. I think that this city is a place where people live in the fastest possible way. Everyone is running somewhere all day long. The second thing that most tourists visit when they come to New York is Empire State Building which was built in only 410 days.

Rockefeller Center is consisted of 19 skyscrapers from Fifth to Seventh Avenue. Grand Central Terminal is a sort of a temple where the past of New York is illustrated. Pay attention to the roof above you. Tell a secret to your partner in whispering gallery. Central Park is I think one of the most famous parks in the world. It is a sort of oasis in New York. This park offers so many things. It has few lakes, Botanical garden, summer stage.

Times Square is one of the most important crossroads in Manhattan. On almost every building in that area are large LCD screens with commercials, stock data and TV programs. Metropolitan Museum of Art has pieces of art from all over the world. About two million pieces of art. Fifth Avenue represents one of the most famous shopping streets in the world.

9. Istanbul - The only city in two continents

Istanbul is the place which combines East and West, Europe and Asia. The first thing of which Istanbul associates me is art of trade, rich cultural and historical heritage. Pleasant climate, rich nightlife, friendly people, great cuisine - just a few things that this city offers and makes Istanbul an attractive destination for tourists. Istanbul is a city which has changed its name for three times. First it was Byzantium, then Constantinople when it was the center of Roman Empire. In 1453 it was conquered by Mehmed II the Conqueror and he called it Istanbul.

What can you see in Istanbul? Well, a lot of things. Every sightseeing and exploring the tourist attractions of Istanbul starts with Hippodrome, ie from Sultanahmet Square. There are located four important points: fountain of German King Wilhelm, Constantine Obelisk, Egyptian Obelisk, the oldest monument in the city, and the Serpentine column. Ayasofya ( Hagia Sophia ) once the largest Christian church in the world, and then the largest mosque, is now a museum. In this cultural and historical center is the Topkapi palace, the former residence of the Sultan.

Pride of the city are two beautiful bridges called Fatih bridge and Bosphorus bridge which connect two continents. You must also visit the biggest closed bazaar in the world, a massive labyrinth of shops, streets and alleys called Kapali bazaar. What you also should visit is one of the largest mosques in the city, Suleiman Mosque, where is the tomb of Suleiman the Magnificent.

10. Hong Kong - City with 7650 skyscrapers

Hong Kong is the region of the People's Republic of China, and operates as an independent state has its own laws, money, sports team. It is located on China's south coast and surrounded by the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea, and is famous for its skyscraper's architecture and large natural harbor. The city developed rapidly since 1997. when it was transferred from British to Chinese hands. The city is a perfect blend of several ethnic groups - Filipinos, Indians, Nepalis who still resist assimilation despite successful economic integration. Hong Kong also has beautiful mountains, white beaches and beautiful islands in addition to the usual good food, excellent shopping centers and world-class hotels.

You must visit Statue Square because of its modern architecture. East of it is Tower IM Pei's Bank of China. There is also Wong Tai Sin, traditional temple which is located in the heart of Kowloon and It is a combination of Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist tradition. Times Square is a huge shopping center. Wide complex consists of nine floors of shops, characterized by a spectacular exterior with a large screen and an electronic clock - the memory of a great millennial countdown of year 2000.

11. Vienna - City of music and world renowned composers - Mozart and Beethoven

I have heard that Vienna is absolutely fabulous and it is a must visit city. Vienna has a long history, with a lot of famous names. But I think it is most famous because of Mozart and Beethoven who found inspiration in this mesmerizing city. There were other remarkable and famous world composers in this city of music. Some of the things you should visit are Haus der Musik, Kunsthalle Wien, Theater an der Wien, Mozarthaus, Belvedere Palace and many other unique museums and buildings.

Kunsthalle is located in the heart of Vienna's Museum Quarter. This cultural institutions of contemporary art is perceived as a workshop, a laboratory and a place of discussion on today's aesthetic and social attitudes. Haus der Musik is a modern museum. Test your musical talent with new and improved "virtual conductor'' , compose your own waltz or experiment with sounds. House of Mozart is located at Domgasse 5 and it is the only preserved Mozart's apartment in Vienna. The exhibition shows the life and work of this musical genius.

There is also the Imperial Palace, Hofburg which until 1918 was a small town. Today there is the Office of the President of Austria, an international conference center, numerous museums, the chapel where the Vienna Boys' Choir sings. Sisi Museum (Museum of Empress Elizabeth) was opened in 2004. There are exhibited many personal items and portraits of beautiful empress. Also you should visit Austrian National Library, a true jewel of Baroque architecture and one of the most beautiful historical libraries in the world.

12. Rio de Janeiro - City of carnivals

Rio de Janeiro is a city which you simply must visit. It is the city in which you live on the street. Everything you need you will find on the street. If you missed the carnival, don't worry. When the carnival ends, they start preparations for the next year's carnival. I think that the most famous thing in Rio except the carnival is the famous beach Copacabana. There is also national park with many tropical plants and there is Corcovado mountain from which the view is spectacular. You must visit the Amazon jungle while you are in Rio de Janeiro.

Ipanema is sophisticated mix of beaches, bars and boutiques. The center of the Ipanema beach is nestled between the beaches of Leblon and Aproador. Ipanema is also the location of numerous galleries, there is arts and crafts market known as the Hippie Fair. For football fans the inevitable location is Maracana. Estadio Maracana has become the largest stadium in the world with 200,000 seats when it was built to host the final of the World Cup in 1950. Sightseeing tour of the stadium includes locker rooms, access to the forums and look at the terrain.

13. Marrakech - Exotic city

If you want an exotic adventure with cultural contrast, if you want to try best mint tea then you must visit Morocco. Marrakech is a paradise for those who enjoy in shopping. Shopping fever starts in the main square Djemaa el-Fna. During the day, this is a market where you can buy fruits, spices, food ... every few meters, you can refresh yourself with the fresh Moroccan citrus juice or eat refreshing fruit cactus, called cactus apple. During the evening and night, the square turns into a huge theater with premieres every few minutes. There is no replay. Here come acrobats, dancers, musicians, snake charmer, narrators, fire-eaters, amateur boxers.

When you get tired of shopping, Marrakech offers a break in amazing gardens of Menara, botanic garden. One of the most beautiful places in Marrakech is definitely botanical garden Jardins Majorelle. Creator of this green paradise was a famous painter Jacques Majorelle back in the 1931 and it was restored by Yves Saint Lauren on whose behalf is build a sculpture in shape of cactus. Most interesting and photogenic part of the garden is definitely a cactus alley.

Menara is the next location you should see. It's olive grove from 19th century with large pool. In the background there are traces of Atlas mountain. The most interesting scenes Marrakesh await you deep in the streets of Medina. Places you shouldn't miss when in Marrakech are Bahia Palace built in 1880, El Badia Palace from 16th century which is a true example of Arab and Andalusian culture.

Morocco isn't a place for those who love beer and wine, well alcohol in general. You can't buy alcohol in every pub and bar.

14. Barcelona - One of the most popular destinations among tourists

Barcelona is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world, attracting millions and millions of tourists. So why is it so popular? Because it has almost everything that you want when you are on vacation. Easy accessibility, good weather all year round, beautiful beaches and mountains, nightlife, delicious local food and is rich in culture and history. Barcelona is another word for diversity and truly offers something for everyone: families, couples and single people. Therefore, it is actually impossible to compile a list of things to see and do in Barcelona because there is just too much. But here are some of the places you should visit if you are in Barcelona.

Camp Nou is for football fans and is one of the most popular attractions in Barcelona. This incredible and largest stadium in Europe can have around 99 000 people. Barceloneta is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There are seven beaches in the city but this one surpasses them all. It is one of the most popular and closest to the city center.

Parc Guell is a aprk where you will feel like in a fairy tale. This park was built by Antonio Gaudi and it is one of his most praised works. Visiting this park will truly be a magical experience. La Rambla is one of the most famous streets in Barcelona and is full of life and activities. It is located near to Plaza Catalunya. In this street you will encounter a variety of street performers, bars and restaurants and famous La Boqueria market. And of course I have to mention Sagrada Familia Basilica, the biggest attraction in Barcelona also made by famous architect Antoni Gaudi. Impressive interior and exterior of this amazing Basilica is something you can't miss.

15. Sydney - The oldest city in Australia

Sydney is a popular tourist destination because of its climate, beaches and location. I think that the first association on Australia is The Opera. It was built in the expressionist style and is listed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO. National Park "Blue Mountains" is located about 65 kilometers west of Sydney, and is known for its beautiful countryside, forests.

Australia is a country with a lot of poisonous insects, bugs, snakes and other animals. Father from one of my friends was in Australia and he told me that he couldn't sleep for the first seven days because of the spiders. Scary!!

I would love to visit the beaches. I heard they are beautiful. There are around 40 beaches in Sydney where you can swim, surf, learn how to surf, dive and all other water activities.

What is the most beautiful city in your opinion? - In this list are the cities that I consider the most beautiful and that I would love to visit. Of course ther

I've been to few cities from your list and I would definitely love to visit the rest. Love travel lenses, and this one is very nice!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos! I have visited some of these cities but I can't wait to start traveling again once my children get a little older.

I would have to add Edinburgh to the list - but I am biased. I've been to quite a few of those you listed - and they are beautiful. Very nice lens!

Would love to see them all. I have seen New York and was less than impressed; I think the U.S. has better to offer for beauty.

Very interesting choice, I'm not sure I'd even be able to limit myself if I had to. Good choices though, I'd like to see most of those. Fantastic lens! ~blessed~
