1. Florida is home to the oldest European settlement in all of North America. St Augustine is located on the eastern coast and is the oldest European settlement.

2. The city of Miami is the only city in the United States to border two National Parks. The Everglades National Park in the north side and on the east side the Biscayne National Park

3. Florida is home to the largest space flight/launch center in the world in Cape Canaveral Florida.

4. The oldest college in Florida is in the city of winter Park The Rollins College was founded in 1881

5. Punta Gorda is an unusual name even in Spanish. It translates to “large Point” because of the way the land juts out in the ocean.

6. Orlando is the number one amusement park city in the world. It gets nearly 9 million new visitors every year that come and enjoy the wide variety of parks and amusement rides.

7. Florida is sometimes mistaken as the southern most state in the union. However, Hawaii is actually the southern most state

8. Florida holds the record for most unusual museums in the world. There are more museums in Florida that cater to the Unknown and weird than any other state. Some of them being shells, Ripley’s believe it or not, coral castle, ear wax museum, and many others.

9. In a small city on the west side of Florida, there is a small community of Safety harbor. This small community is home to the Espirto Santo Springs which for generations have been visited by people because of the natural curing powers they are possessed to have.

10. Florida is known as the lighting capital of the world. The city with the most lighting strikes per year is the city of Clearwater on Florida’s West side.

11. Florida is also awarded the most unusual festivals trophy every year in Niceville Florida they celebrate the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival.

12. The University of Florida was the first ones to invent the drink Gatorade.

13. Aviation history was made in Tampa Florida when Tony Jannus flew the world’s first scheduled commercial flight from St Petersburg to Tampa Basin

14. The first refrigerator was invented in Florida in 1851. It changed the way and how long foods could be stored and savored before consumption.

15. The first suntan cream was invented in Florida, to protect people from the harsh UV rays by Ben Green in 1944

16. The first riding lawn mower was invented by Neil smith, He invented the Snapper.

17. Key west once declared independence from the US to become known as the Conch Republic. It did not succeed of course but is still widely celebrated there.

18. Florida is known for its unusual and beautiful rivers. The most unusual is the Saint Johns river it flows, from south to north.

19. The State of Florida official named its state Gem the Moon stone ironically it was never found in Florida or on the moon.

20. The first ATM’s were placed on the Miami beach ports for the convenience of walkers and roller bladders in 1981
