3rd Day in Indonesia, Surabaya (Mt. Bromo) - 1

Updated on January 15, 2012

From 2nd Day in Indonesia, Surabaya (Mt. Bromo) , now we proceed to Day 3 in Surabaya....

Day 3 :

CEMERO LAWANG(NGADISARI) PENANJAKAN MOUNT BROMO SAVANNA

Woke up at 3am, got ready to go to Penanjakan viewpoint. We engaged a jeep for the whole journey mentioned above at the reception of the guesthouse. Reached Penanjakan at around 4.20, I was trembling in the cold dawn even we got ready with cold dresses and shawls. It was better, after taking a short distance trail walk to the viewpoint to wait for the sunrise view around the volcanoes. We found there were crowds waiting for the sunrise. Sky was getting brighter, but there was no great sunrise view because of the thick fog around the volcanoes. We could only saw a clear view of the volcanoes Mt Bromo, Mt Batuk and Mt Sumero after the sunrise.

After our Penanjakan journey, we proceeded to Mount (Gunung) Bromo. This was the main visiting point for this journey. We passed through large sea sand; finally reached the entrance gate of the volcanoes. Jeeps can only stop here. There is still around 1.5 km sea sand walk from the entrance gate to the foot of the mountain. Or we can pick an alternative to ride a horse to pass the sea sand. I never ride a horse before, so I choose to ride a horse. The name of the groom is Tokol and the young horse i rode is Koncil. On the ride to pass through the sea sand, Toyol taught me some simple way to ride a horse.

At the foot of the Mt Bromo we had to hike up a steep path about 250 steps to the edge of the crater. There is a precarious ledge on top of the crater to gaze into the volcano. But it was misty; I couldn’t see anything except the mist.

I choose to walk back to the entrance gate. A boy fell down from the back of horse and cried, I stopped my pace to help to appease him. Luckily the boy was not injured. This incident made me late for 4 other friends to wait for me. I felt so sorry about that.

We continued journey towards the Savana, and stayed shortly there to take some nice photos of the beautiful landscape. And I understood that this was the bonus of our trip. The feeling was like we are in the dessert then we saw a big piece of oasis in front of us. It’s fantastic!!

Expenses on this journey:

*Jeep for the journey - Rp205k

*Horse riding – single trip Rp40k, returned Rp70k
