5 Tips for Staying Active While Traveling
Staying active while traveling long term can be a difficult task. It can be hard when a routine isn't in place and it's tempting to let your fitness go to the wayside. There are, however, ways to make staying fit easier while enjoying your travels.
Take advantage of outdoor Gyms
Outdoor gyms can be found throughout the world. Typically they can be found in parks in major cities. Usually they have basic calisthenic equipment like chin up bars and bars for dips. Some parks have free weights as well. They are typically free and an excellent way to meet locals while enjoying some fresh air. I've found free outdoor gyms or calisthenics parks in major cities like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Calgary and Mexico city to name a few.
Slow down your travels
It can be tempting to try and see as much as possible while traveling. Sometimes we can get caught up in trying to see as much as possible, spending one night here, a couple nights there. It can lead to burnout and it's hard to get into a routine while jumping from place to place all the time. Taking some time to stay in one place, maybe a week or two, can be very beneficial and can help get back into a fitness routine and help make better food choices.
Walking is one of the best ways to stay active while traveling. Instead of getting ripped off paying for a taxi to see some sights why not try walking. You not only get some exercise but you save money and lower your carbon footprint a little. It's a win win.
Rent a bicycle
Biking is one of my favorite ways to explore different places. Many cities like Montreal have a bike sharing system where you can pick up and drop off bikes at various points throughout the city. It's pretty affordable as well. Many times hostels or hotels rent bicycles by the hour or by the day.
Eat a bit better
Sometimes while traveling we can completely neglect our diet. Although it's nice to enjoy some pastries or fried food while traveling try to balance it out with some healthy alternatives with fruit and vegetables. Cutting back on alcohol is also a good idea, not only will you eliminate a lot of empty calories but you will have more energy as well.
