If you are like many haunted house aficionados, you may sometimes feel that each new location you visit is much the same as the last. If your haunted house visits are starting to feel just a little bland and unsurprising, a trip to the extraordinarily unique Steampunk Haunted House in New York City could be just what you need. One word you will never use to describe this haunted house is “boring!”

The Steampunk Haunted House differs from most haunted houses in that it does not simply try to startle or gross out its visitors. Rather, it tries to play subtly – or not so subtly – with their minds. When you first arrive at the location, you are greeted by an upscale but faded house of apparently Victorian origin – although certainly not of quite the same Victorian era recorded by history.

This off-kilter vibe grows stronger as you make your way through the house. Unlike in many haunted houses, you are not limited to a narrow pathway that that you must stick to throughout the experience in the Steampunk Haunted House. Rather, you are permitted – or perhaps dared would be a better word – to explore the horrors the house contains however you wish, depending on the specific performance being staged that particular year.

The Steampunk Haunted House provides an experience different from that in any other haunted house.

Oddly enough, the Steampunk Haunted House actually avoids the use of the piles of gore and buckets of blood so commonly found in most haunted houses. That is not to say, however, that it is tame – far from it. It simply chooses the subtler path of gradually playing with the minds of its audience, rather than the seemingly easier strategy of immediately piling on the obvious shocks. The long-term fright payoff of the Steampunk Haunted House, however, is impressive, to say the least.

The steampunk subculture has been explored in a wide variety of different movies, graphic novels, games and other forms of media. Put as simply as possible, steampunk imagines a world in which Victorian-era steam technology had been developed to its full potential, instead of being replaced by electricity, internal combustion and other forms of technology.

The results can be bizarre, creating fertile ground for the imaginations of horror aficionados. This is evidenced by your trip through the Steampunk Haunted House, which will lead you to such sights as gear-driven creatures, floating wraiths and mechanical horrors. Many of the performances and backdrops staged at the House are inspired by a twisted take on Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass stories.
