A Holiday in Las Vegas

Updated on October 21, 2014

I had always wished and wondered what it would be like to visit this beautiful city, with its grandeur hotels and the best casinos just gorgeously dotting the Las Vegas Strip. This city never sleeps and rightfully so, with having so much to offer than just gambling and shopping, and making sure that your fun lasts long. The amount of activity to engage in is mind boggling, whether it’s gambling, dining out, or the splendid song and dance shows, numerous strip clubs, tons of museums or just a trip to the famous Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon not very far from the city. I was completely in awe of Vegas, just like any other visitor who saves up and makes it a point to spend it all before heading back home.

Las Vegas is the perfect place to visit in the summers to completely soak in its magic and truly enjoy the spirit of the city even though temperatures can soar up to 115 degrees. Boarding a plane is the cheapest and best option to travel to Vegas, since taking the road more traveled can be tiresome and can reduce the number of days you plan to stay in Vegas. Once you have landed in Vegas, there are numerous options for hiring luxurious cars at the airport itself at reasonable rates, so you can feel like a king or a queen the moment you have arrived. There’s no stopping from then on.

Stay in Las Vegas

There are so many options to choose from for your stay in Vegas ranging from the type of stay and the location. You can decide whether to stay on the Strip, just off the Strip or in downtown Las Vegas. However, a good idea would be to book your stay on the Strip to enjoy all the action. The numerous hotel and resort deals on the internet will spoil you rotten with their offers and discounts and other services to choose from throughout the year.

We chose our stay at The Trump Hotel, Las Vegas which is located on the Strip, and although we missed out on the amazing view of The Strip, there is a good chance you may not if you book ahead and avoid a long weekend or a vacation time. However, the hotel does make up for it with its amazing service and king size luxurious rooms to make you feel extremely comfortable upon your arrival.

Buffets in Vegas

You just cannot do Vegas without doing its buffet. A hearty and extravagant spread of appetizers, entrées and a gamut of desserts at top notch restaurants always leave you craving for more. Whether it’s the delicious breakfast buffet at the Wynn, or the charming Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace, or the spread at Bellagio; these places surely encourage gluttony and are a true feast for the eyes.

Making your way to the breakfast/lunch table might take a bit longer than you have imagined, especially during the peak period, or during a long weekend when everyone throngs the place. So unless it seems way too ambitious to wake up early on a morning in Vegas and reach the restaurant on time, you would be waiting in a long queue for close to an hour for your turn to finally arrive.

The cost of a buffet differs in the form of a weekday rate to a weekend rate and a holiday rate so be prepared to shell out in order to enjoy those delicious crab legs, oak grilled lamb chops, super soft dumplings, delightful ribs, tempting cheesecakes, and much more, along with the choicest alcohol.

Las Vegas Shows

If you decide to take a break from the gambling, it is always a must to visit some of the extraordinary shows in Vegas. Along with other attractions, the shows provide you with an experience of a lifetime and stay true to the spirit of Vegas. You can pre-book your tickets online and select from genres such as magic, concerts, adult, comedy, dance, play, musicals etc. The shows typically start by about 7 pm and go on till 11 pm, so you can hit the casino later and enjoy the rest of the night.

We really enjoyed Vegas! The Show, a musical based on beautiful performances by talented artistes at the Saxe Theatre at Planet Hollywood. The show gives you a glimpse of Vegas over the years and takes you along the journey of its rise and fame. Another must see show is Absinthe at Caesars Palace which has been highly rated by most fans and is a classic mix of comedy, powerful performances and drama. To some the jokes may seem a little over the top, but if you are willing to ignore the humor and the modest seating arrangements for the incredible performances in the two hour long show, it is a must see and is totally worth your money. We also attended one of the magic shows by David Copperfield at MGM Grand. As an illusionist, Copperfield did do a great job at enthralling the audience with his mind blowing performances one after another; however I didn’t quite find it so charming.

Other Attractions

Vegas is full of activities to do in the night as well as during the day. While most people prefer to stay indoors during the day due to the immense heat, a visit to some of the casino attractions is fulfilling in more ways than one. A visit to the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens at The Bellagio is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The brilliant display of nature in its vivid forms lets your imagination run wild and you are inspired by its gorgeous plants, trees and aquarium. The Bellagio is also famous for its larger than life fountain at the entrance of the hotel which attracts huge masses every evening to witness its gentle but lively musical performance.

You would not want to miss the Madame Tussauds wax museum at The Venetian, featuring wax statues of famous Hollywood celebrities, singers, musicians and sportsmen in the US history. Apart from the museums, shopping malls, and food are also the amazing observation decks of which the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower is quite popular. At 1,149 feet, it is the tallest free standing observation tower in the US and offers expansive views of The Strip. In addition, it also provides outdoor tower rides and an outdoor observation deck for those who are daring and adventurous. Another unique experience is The High Roller which is nothing like your average Ferris wheel. The biggest in the world at 550 feet, it comprises of transparent roomy pods with benches holding 40 passengers each. The High Roller provides a perfect panoramic view of the Strip.

And if this is not enough, take a walk on the Strip at night to enjoy the amazing and outstanding views of the casinos from outside with their brightest LED strip lights and shining facades.

Hoover Dam

More Great Things to Do

If you still have some time left during the day, you may want to venture out and visit the historic Hoover Dam and soak in the breathtaking view of the Colorado River. The iconic dam is a perfect place to enjoy peace and tranquility from the hustle and bustle of city life. You can also drive a couple of miles further from there to the incredible Grand Canyon. The steep sided canyons and the Colorado River flowing below take you back to a million years when the canyons originated and leave you astounded by its great depth. It is a visual delight and its beauty cannot be expressed in words.
