A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Food Shopping

Updated on August 28, 2011

Grocery Shopping on a Rainy Sunday Morning

As usual, I arrived in Chinatown (NYC) a little past 8 AM on a Sunday morning (Sunday - 8/14/11) to do food shopping. Mother nature has been very generous with rain this season. As much as I love rain, I do not enjoy shopping for groceries in my wet clothes and hair flying over my face. When I stepped out of my car, it started to pour. Luckily, there was scalfolding right next to where I parked my car so I got a temporay shelter. Just as the scalfoding served as a big umbrella for me, my car served as a shelter for my little friend, "Mickey Mouse." Yes, I had a visitor! I didn't notice that there was a tiny mouse underneath my car until my sister pointed it out to me. Immediately, I jumped to my feet; with my phone in hand, I quietly walked over to get a closer look at my little friend. I normally don't like mouse except the cartoon character, Mickey Mouse, but this little one caught my attention. I said to myself, "Thank goodness I didn't roll over it with my car (as I was backing up)."

Good thing I didn't disturb Mickey. I bent down to see what he was doing. It turned out that he was munching on his food. I didn't know how to explain it, this mouse was so cute! Quickly, I snapped a picture of him. He was quite smart. What I meant by that was Mickey knew it was raining so he just took his sweet little time to enjoy his breakfast - my car served as a big umbrella for him. According to the Chinese zodiac, those who are born in the year of the "Rat" are considered very clever. Perhaps, it's true.

Not wanting to scare him away, we left the scene to have breakfast with my grandma. When I showed her the picture of Mickey, grandma just burst into laughter. What a nice way to start off a gloomy Sunday morning! Seeing the little mouse reminded me of my grandma; in the old days, catching mice using the mouse trap.

Time to Go Home

If on any normal day, I would love to walk around more. Had I not been on a food shopping mission, I would have enjoyed walking in the rain. During this time, I kept wondering whether my little friend was still there. Hmm, he must have left to find a better shelter since the downpour of rain just got more intense and the temperature dropped significantly.  Approximately three hours past, we were ready to go home. I walked to the back of my car to see if Mickey Mouse was still there, and just as what I had expected; he wasn't there. I guess Mickey has gone home. Likewise, we left for our home. The end!

Hi Fastionista! Thanks for your comment and vote. It must be nice to see real chipmunks. I've only seen the cartoons :)

Such a cute story, happypuppy! I'm an animal lover as well and it's amazing how they can really seem to express their personalities. I live near a wooded area and I've seen many birds, squirrels, and chipmunks, but so far I haven't seen anyone related to "Mickey." :) Thanks for sharing your story! Voted up!

Squirrels are lovely to watch, especially when they climb up the trees. It would be nice to watch a group of them together. I normally can spot one or two...they tend to run away from people.

Cute story. It's funny how little creatures can amuse us. I remember looking at squirrels at Green park by Buckingham palace, just this past summer--they are so adorable and I love watching how they interact with other squirrels and what they do with the food thrown to them. Thanks for sharing.
