Bannerghatta National Park (Bannerghatta Biological Park)

Bangalore (called Bengaluru from November 1, 2014) in southern India is a great place to visit as a tourist destination. One of the main attractions of Bengaluru is Bannerghatta Biological Park at Bannerghatta National Park. Both the children and the elders can enjoy the visit to this exotic place, located just 22 kms from the city. (It is one of the few places in the world where wilderness is preserved so close to the city.)

What to see at Bannerghatta Biological Park?

There are 6 main sections to visit in this Park during your visit.

  • The Zoo
  • The Safari ride to the jungle
  • The Butterfly Zoo
  • Boating
  • Children's Park
  • Shopping

The Park is closed on Tuesdays and remember it while planning your visit. The official time of the Park is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the ticket counter starts functioning only by 9.30 a.m. on an ordinary day. (We visited on an ordinary day).

After taking your tickets, you can start your visit preferably by visiting the zoo. It is a small zoo, but maintained well, and the animals are also fed well. Before the safari, which starts at 11 a.m., it is wise to visit the zoo. The animals in the zoo are fed during this time, and if you are lucky you can see how they are fed.

(The tickets can also be booked online on their website. A link to their website is also given in the links section).

Safari at Bannerghatta National Park

The safari in the AC bus was a safe and pleasant experience. (Safari charges are given below) The driver stopped the vehicle for the common convenience of the visitors and hence we had ample time to click some photos of the wild animals. The animals we spotted, during the safari, were tigers, white tigers, lions, elephants, bears, deers, etc in the wilderness, and hence they were not in captivity. The first safari of the day started at 11.10 am and by then the bus was full. It took almost 45 minutes and the vehicle was stopped near the Butterfly Park, as the end of the safari. The driver told us that we can visit the Butterfly Park, just by a short walk , and return to the entrance without a problem. After dropping us at the end of the safari, the vehicle went back..

Educational purpose

Bannerghatta Biological Park is a great place for the school children to learn about the wild animals. Since it was an ordinary working day there were many school children accompanied by their teachers were also there. It is nothing like seeing the animals directly and learning, which no book in the class can provide.

The Zoo at Bannerghatta National Park

When compared to the international zoos (I had already seen three of them) Bannerghatta zoo is very small in size. It is a well maintained zoo, with well fed animals and birds. White Peafowl, peacock, colorful parrots, owls, doves were some of the birds and deer, snakes, were also there. For convenience, the Zoo provides a three wheeler vehicle for a fee of Rs.300/- to go around and, but we preferred to walk and see the places for ourselves.

The Butterfly Park at Bannerghatta National Park

The Butterfly Park at the BBP, established in 2007, is a unique project in the whole country. It is a beautiful place with a lot of butterflies flying around, housed in an innovatively designed three dome structure. Many types of bright green plants with bright colored flowers and a tiny pond with few fishes, provide a chance to the photographers to click their camera several times.

Boating at Bannerghatta National Park

After our visit to the zoo was over, we saw the board leading to the Boat ride. Since we were very tired we decided to cancel our boat ride and returned.

Children's Park

There is also an area for the kids, to play and enjoy, located close to the shopping complex. They offer a variety of joy rides for the kids like the giant wheel, merry-go-round and other usual stuff for the entertainment of the kids. It is run by private party, and not by the BBS.
