I live in Houston and have worked as a nurse. I have a lifelong passion for traveling, nature, and photography (preferably all together!).

AG Antiques

People entering the AG Antiques on West 19th store in the Houston Heights receive a genuine “welcome” greeting from people at the front desk. “If there is anything we can do to help you, please let us know.” That was our experience when we first entered this large store containing antiques and collectibles.

Best Antiques Store

The Houston Press gave the title of “Best Antiques Store” to AG Antiques on West 19th in 2015. For those unfamiliar with the Houston Press, it is a weekly newspaper publication distributed free of charge to restaurants, retail stores, and other locations. Advertisers are its lifeblood and support its operation.

Writers for the Houston Press cover news, including entertainment and events around town. For the latest updates on theater productions, musical venues, or where to relax while being wined and dined at casual pubs to upscale restaurants, many people are kept informed every week.

Paid subscription newspaper readership, in general, has declined over the years. The Houston Press is a welcomed adjunct to the Houston Chronicle. Readership for the Houston Press is reported to be more than 300,000 people. It is easy to understand why advertisers are willing to spend their precious advertising dollars there.

Amenities in AG Antiques

One thing my husband and I particularly liked about the AG Antiques on West 19th was the fact of it being air-conditioned. People can shop in comfort year-round there.

We have visited other appealing antique places such as August Antiques. It is also located in the Houston Heights and is well worth a visit. People seeking religious items, rare books, and architectural salvage would particularly like what is there. But it can be uncomfortable for periods when Houston temperatures are in the upper registers because of it not being air-conditioned.

The wide aisles at AG Antiques are excellent, and the store has many different sections where independent vendors display their wares. Sellers spend time and effort into making their sections appealing and inviting.

This antique store is not a place in which customers wander through dusty passages with barely enough wiggle room to get through a mishmash of garage sale items in dimly lit enclosures. We have experienced those types of stores also.

Overhead fluorescent lighting, as well as many lit lamps and other sources, keep this spacious store with high ceilings brightly illuminated. The concrete floors can easily be kept clean.

Some items, such as jewelry or Lladro porcelains, are in glass-enclosed cases. The dealers help one another with sales, and objects are well marked as to prices.

So Many Items to Discover

We saw such exciting and diverse things for sale! In one booth, there was a sizable collection of African masks and carvings. From poster art to paintings, sculptures to bric-a-brac, crystal goblets to sets of antique china…that and more are on view and for sale.

My husband generally does not like browsing in antique stores, and yet he found the AG Antiques store to his liking. I am confident that we will return in the future if looking for unique items to acquire or to give as gifts. There is something there to suit just about everyone’s taste and budget.

      Hi Denise,

It is sometimes amazing what can be found in yard sales. Most antique shops research and know better the value of things, I agree. Yet, they are still fun places to visit and shop.

I love looking at old paintings. Usually, in an antique shop, the owner has done his homework and knows what he has, but often in yard sales, you can find paintings the owner didn't know was valuable. Here in California, there was a California Impressionist artist and naturalist who liked to travel the state doing watercolor landscapes and giving them away in exchange for a place to sleep. Today those paintings are worth thousands of dollars and many people have no idea.

      Blessings,

      Denise

I might have actually been here when my brother lived in Houston. If it’s where I was thinking it was wonderful!

This looks like a real treasure trove. Your description carries just the right amount of detail. I found the note about air conditioning very helpful.
