Aeroplane tragedy at Mangalore

Updated on January 17, 2013

Morning of May 22nd.2010 was not a usual one for Mangaloreans,a glamorous coastal city in Karnataka(South India),When Boeing 737-800 plane coming from Dubai ,after touching the runway at the Bajpe airport,11 K.ms away from the city met with the tragic mishap, biggest one in India in the last 26 years.159 people, mostly Karalites, returning to their home state for a holiday, or for some household work from Dubai. This Mangalore -Dubai direct flight service was started some months ago, to felicitate people from Kerala and Mangalore who work in Dubai as Builders, hotel owners, bussinesman, nurses and as labors.

Casualties

Only eight have survived, out of the 167 people aboard the unfortunate plane. The accident has taken 157 lives as per the present available statistics.About 133 bodies, though charred, have been identified and handed over to kins with in 24 hours,i.e.by 4.p.m.(IST) on 23rd 2010.It is decided to conduct DNA test for some bodies for proper identification. Cries of the dearests of the diseased, at the terminal was heart breaking.Local people rushed to help immediately after hearing the sound.

Relief measures

Steps taken by district administration, state and central governments, and the Air-India corporation, was really laudable.Officers immediately rushed to the spot. Police support was immediately provided. Helpline was quickly established.Indian minister for External affairs,Mr.S.M. Krishna, who was in the city rushed to hospital where the survived and injured were admitted. Union minister for labor, Mr.Mallikarjuna Kharge also arrived within hours. Home minister of Karnataka state, Mr. V.S.Acharya,who belongs to same area, was there to look after the relief operations.

Causes for mishap

This is still unknown. But ,it is reported that it is not a terrorist act, not due to bad climate. The pilot ,Mr.Z.Glusica,a man with 1600hours flying experience as pilot was a very good pilot, He has very good service record-it is said.He is a British national with Serbian origin. He had flown planes to Mangalore several times and was well aware of the condition in that airport.Runway is quite new and long enough. How it occurred.?

It is reported that,While landing, after touching the runway, the plane tilted and the pilot, for some reason best known to him, tried to take the plane off the runway and fly it again. In that effort, the plane moved off the runway ,hit the wall of bags kept aside, and moved to the valley outside the airport area. In the process, the plane split into two and started burning. some people jumped and saved themselves. It is assumed that some technical failure, still to be traced may be the cause of the mishap. Co-pilot, Mr. Ahluwalia, also was killed in the accident.

Black box is now traced, and reasons have to be known.

Investigations

Director General of Civil Aviation has ordered an independent probe into the unfortunate incident.Govt. Of India, in order to know the technical reasons, has invited American experts in the field, and the team has reached India today i.e.-May 24th.

Never such an incident had taken place at Mangalore airport. AIR-INDIA is going to give a compensation of Rs 72 lakhs, to each of the victims. Union govt and Karnataka governments have announced a compensation of 2 lakh rupees, to each of the deceased's family.

Mangalore is a place just 250 K.ms from where I live. I have visited that city city several times. The people are very industrious. It is charming city. But now it takes several weeks for them to smile again.

Just today,on 20th July 2011,Karnataka high court has passed an order,to pay 75 lakhs compensation to each of the dead. This is a great financial solace to the bereaves families.

      Additional Note:

Now, the tragedy is almost forgotten. The aeroplane company has been ordered by the supreme court to pay more compensation to the victims.

      Dear Mr.hafeezrm,

Now the preliminery investigation is over and the last minute recordings in the black box are out. It has come to be known that the negligence by pilot , and his not listening to co-pilot's suggestion, is the reason for the tragedy.Compensation is given to the victims' legal heirs but it is very less when compared to western standards.

Very sad. By now more than three months have passed. Is there any definite clue as to what was the cause. Shall appreciate an update.

Its very unfortunate, I am not sure if the civil aviation ministry has learnt anything from it. Looks the ministry is hell bent on destroying the national carrier.

More horrible when one thinks of the people returning home for a holiday after a year or more away from their loved ones and to have it all snatched away from them at the last moment.
