Are We There Yet? A Mom's Guide to Traveling with Children

Updated on August 23, 2011

Anyone who has children know that even a trip to the grocery store can be just as trying as a trip to the beach.  Are we there yet? is the thing every parent hears as we take out little ones on a long journey.  We know that the trick is keeping them busy during the long car ride or plane ride.  Here are some ideas to keep your little one too busy to ask " Are we there yet?"

One of the things my little guy likes to do is color. And coloring is a wonderful thing to do when you are traveling! Crayola makes some wonderful products that do not involve using ink or crayons. Color Wonder markers are clear until you mark the Color wonder paper. Your child can pick and choose what colors to use, but never worry because these colors will not get on your car or furniture.

If you chose to simplify then use a Colorblast coloring book. The pages come to life as your child uses a clear pen to color over the picture. One pen brings out each color of the picture. This is a bit more economical and fun for your child.  There are variety of characters to choose from.  Spongebob,Diego, and Hello Kitty are some of the more popular Colorblast books.  My little one likes Spiderman.

Portable DVD players are a great way for children to pass the time. The Kidz tough DVD player is tough in case kids drop it. It has a rechargeable battery that has two hours of battery life. The screen is just over 3 inches wide.  It has a kickstand for hands free viewing. Customer reviews are favorable.  Parents not the big buttons make it easy for little ones to push and they catch on quick.  This DVD player by fisher price is available in blue and pink.

This is definitely no mess.  Water only fills the aqua-doodle pen.  This Doodle mat is perfect for the car.  It folds out for your child to draw picture from using the Aqua doodle pen.  The reusable doodle tote carries the  aquadoodle pad.  The pad dries out itself in a matter of minutes so your child can enjoy drawing over and over again.  It receives favorable reviews from parents because of the no mess factor.

Travel Tikes Car Activity Center

This Travel Tikes Activity Center has eight crayons and three stencils and an activity doodle center.  The built in drawing pad has an erasable surface.  There are adjustable straps on the activity center that attaches to the back of the seat.

For the child on the go check out the Kids Travel Bag Sea Collection.  This cute bag is made of velour and has a zipper with hand straps.  This bag is perfect for clothes or for toys.  It is completely washable.   It is cute as a bear rides a fish on a wave.

SafetyTat Child ID Tattoos (ALLERGY 6pk)

When traveling with children safety always comes to mind.  These nifty tattoo stickers are just peel and stick. Write on the sticker the information about your child's allergy or emergency phone number and place the sticker on your child.   The stickers are durable and waterproof.  Great for a trip to camp or the amusement park.  This product was voted the iparent Media greatest Products award and recieved the National parenting seal of approval

Parent comments spoke highly of this product.  The wristband is also available in blue!

Noodlehead Travel Buddies Neck Pillow

One of the things parents hope for most is that their little one gets enough rest.  In order to do that we need to make them as comfortable as possible.  Many times I have looked in the backseat to find my little guy blissfully asleep in his car seat, yet his little head was tilted way over to the side.  Well no more.  Get yourself a child pillow and you won't have to worry.  There are two you can choose from.

The fist one is is the Noodlehead Travel Buddies neck pillow.  This fuzzy pillow is in the shape of an animal that adds support toyt childs neck while sleeping.  There are several animlas to choose from, Cats, pigs and dolphins to name a few.  This product had favorable parent reviews.

This Rest Up Right pillow gives your child a heads up so to speak. The chin rests comfortably in the groove of the pillow. The main part of the pillow rests on he child lap. Don't worry the height of the pillow is adjustable as you can take a piece out of it if need be. The cover comes off and is washable. Customer reviews indicate parents really like this product!  It comes in Navy color too.

Great hub! Very nice tips, and instead of sounding like a commercial, you propose options for dealing with this problem. People can learn from this when attempting to monetize a website.

Music or stories. My kids love them. MP3 player and headphones keeps ours quiet for most of the trip. Nice hub, thanks.

Great advice. I remember those days, but I must say when my grown daughters who have children of their own are in the car with me, it's like the good old days. I want to give them crayons to keep them quiet!

Kids? Shoot I ask that question all the time. Seriously though these are some great tips for keeping the little ones occupied. I remember on a long trip home everyone was asking that, I swear I believe I heard even my dog bark out the question.
