Australia Vacation Planning: Things You Will Need

Updated on May 9, 2012

Requirements to Visit Australia

Australia is one of the world's most popular travel destinations and for good reason. There is lots to see and do in the country so it offers something for almost everybody. If you are planning to take a trip to Australia there are a few things that you are going to have to take care of ahead of time. In some cases it can take months to make all of the arrangements so you will need to start dealing with them well in advance.

The first thing that you have to get if you are planning a trip to Australia is a visa, they are free and fairly easy to get but you do have to get them in advance. Unlike most other countries Australia does not allow you to get a visa at the airport. The only people who don't need a visa are citizens of New Zealand so everybody else will need to get one. A visitors visa will allow you to stay in the country for a period of three months which should be plenty for most vacationers.

In order to get a visa the best way to do it is to contact the Australian embassy in your country. It can take several weeks so make sure that you start early. The other option that you have is to contact the Foreign Affairs Department in Canberra but this approach will take you even longer. It is best to not make any other travel arrangements until you know that you will be able to get the visa.

If you don't have one you are also going to need to get a passport in order to go to Australia, except for people from New Zealand again who are exempt. A passport is not difficult to get but it can take some time. Each country has a different procedure for how you go about getting a passport so you will have to check how it is done in your country. In almost all cases your government will make instructions available on their website so it should be pretty easy to find out how to get a passport.

One other thing that you are going to have to make sure that you arrange well in advance for your vacation to Australia is travellers insurance. This is something that you should have any time that you travel but is especially important for a trip to Australia because of the costs that are involved. Australia has a great health care system but it costs a fortune if you are not a citizen. If you were to get sick or injured the cost of medical treatment in Australia would be astronomical if you did not have insurance. Even the cost of flying you home would be thousands of dollars so you have to make sure that you get travellers insurance. One other thing that you have to keep in mind is that if you are injured in a remote area like the outback you would need to be transported to a big city like Sydney or Melbourne to get medical care which will greatly add to the cost.
