City Overview

Vasco da Gama aka Vasco city is one of those wonderful west coast cities located in Goa, India. The headquarters of Mormugao taluka, Vasco city, is named on the great Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. Founded in 1543, Vasco stayed under the Portuguese rule until 1961 after which India annexed Goa. Vasco is Goa’s only city linked perfectly by sea, air, road and rail. The city is core hub for most sightseers visiting Goa.


Tourism Attraction

Vasco city’s maximum economic activity weightily relies on the city’s major seaport Mormugao. The largest employer of Vasco region is the harbor’s operating trust baptized as the Mormugao Port Trust.

The city is gifted by a striking 400 year old monument being a major tourist magnetism located at the entry, the St. Andrew’s Church aka lgreja de Santo Andre’. Furthermore, the famed Naval Aviation Museum located around the airport is also a well-liked sightseeing spot being the only one of its kind in the whole country. It comprises India’s history in naval aviation having extraordinary matchless photographs. Apart from that, there are several beautiful beaches in the city’s lap. Similar to all other cities and towns of state Goa, Vasco also celebrates Shigmo and hosts the street parade of annual Carnival.

The hilltop fronting the ocean holds the beautiful “Japanese Garden” on the way of which, you can have beautiful sights of the ships floating in immense ocean. This tourist spot is generally unknown to many visitors, which keep it calm and quiet most of the time. You can take a slow walk down to a shrine at the shore or a sidewalk, which will lead you to nearby navy apartments.


For the flavors of food in the city, there are several food destinations appreciated by many visitors. The Chinese restaurant Ginza wins many hearts for endowing the food being “good”. Another eminent restaurant is Rangoli, which organizes live music events with delicious food some evenings. The same building has a 24-hour running fast food hangout “Temptation” liked by younger generation of the city.

The seafood specialty owners Vasco inn is an Indian, Chinese and Goan AC restaurant and bar. Appealing the old allure, The Regency and Sweet-n-Sour serves perfect traditional food. Other than these, you can check out several other food outlets in the city.

Shopping and Nightlife

The Goa Shopping Center of Vasco City has a lot for shopping. This one stop shop for everything is Vasco’s major shopping joint. The Anjuna Market, Big G Mall and Margao Market are other chief shopping markets of Vasco City. The Vasco’s Municipal Market is termed as typical Goan market. The textile, jewelry and leather stores make it the focal point of the city.
