Dunedin is far south in New Zealand, so the weather can be chilly! Blue & Yellow-Eyed Penguins come into the peninsula to nest.

Where is Dunedin?

As you are traveling through the South Island of New Zealand, it is important to stop by Dunedin to see the only castle that is in New Zealand, tramp down to the Tunnel Beach to see gorgeous beauty, and have a play in the ocean where the waves are great for surfing! Many other top things are in Dunedin - including the steepest street in the world, a chocolate factory with delicious samples galore, and, if you're lucky, you can watch Yellow-Eyed Penguins swim in for a rest. Dunedin is located on the Southern part of the East coast of the South Island in New Zealand.

Castles and Gardens

One beautiful stop in Dunedin is the Larnach Castle at the Otago Peninsula. This was built in 1871 by William Larnarch who ranched cattle, was a banker, and later entered into politics. He was married 3 times in his life (1st 2 wives died at the age of 39) and had 6 children. His life ended tragically with suicide in the Parliament Building upon learning his 3rd wife was having an affair with his youngest son. The castle was sold by the children and later sold again to the current owners. They have restored the castle to mint condition and renovated beautiful gardens throughout the land surrounding the castle. People can now visit and tour the castle and gardens and even have high tea. It is absolutely lovely.

A Gorgeous Hike!

If you are up for a bit of exercise and camera heaven, this hike is for you! Tunnel Beach starts at the top of the hill and meanders down to the ocean with a clear marked trail. Tramping (as the Kiwis call it) to the bottom where the tunnel formation is a nice, easy trail. It can take as little as 1 hour round trip down and back up to your vehicle. Once you are down to the bottom, you can walk strait out over the tunnel park. There is also a man-made tunnel that has steps that you can go down to the beach area with the waves crashing in. This is a powerful area of New Zealand - both in beauty and in waves!!

Don't Forget the Chocolate!

Dunedin is proud to host the Cadbury Chocolate Factory. During the week, you can tour the entire manufacturing of chocolates in this huge factory. Weekends offer tours too that are well worth the trip. The tour ends with a fun gift shop and Cafe that you can stop for lunch and a chocolate yummy!

Other Sites to See in Dunedin

There are many other sites to see in Dunedin. One especially important place to go is the Steepest Street in the World - Baldwin Street. We drove straight up to the top in our car - but the tires did slip! It is crazy this street - I can't imagine living on a street like this!!! They have races on it of all kinds - it is a community builder for sure! Another great location is the Botanic Gardens of Dunedin as well as the Chinese Gardens in town. Dunedin also has great shopping. The beaches are fantastic for surfing and boogie boarding or just listening to the waves crash in. And don't forget to travel out the Otago Peninsula to see the Yellow-Eyed Penguins and the Northern Royal Alabatross and just some gorgeous coastline views.
