City with a Gorgeous Horizon

Hundreds of years ago, a Catholic Pope came to the city of Belo Horizonte. He said, 'this city has a beautiful horizon' and that became the name of the city. Belo Horizonte is located in the state of Minais Gerais and has a population of 5.7 million people. Direct flights from Miami go to Belo Horizonte almost daily. This beautiful city is about a 5 hour drive from Rio de Janiero and the coast. As an inland city, it has many beautiful hilly and mountainous areas around it to visit, including beautiful little towns with cobble stone streets like Ouro Preto.

This city is a hilly city like San Francisco, California in the United States. It is a city with a lot of character. Brazilians versed in their history will tell you it is the place where airplanes were invented. They point out that the Wright brothers tested flying contraptions but the first airplanes were invented and built in Belo Horizonte. This is a city with a strong intellectual and engineering history.

You can spend weeks in this beautiful place. There are many places to go. The food is amazing and the people are friendly. Here are some pictures of this beautiful city and the surrounding area.

These monkeys are so cute! These monkeys will literally leap from one tree to another. They are harmless and will leave you alone but great to see if you have kids.

A bird wandering around the park in Brazil. I like to think of them as Brazilian chickens. This bird and many like it were roaming wild in the park.

This animal is cute too. It has a long nose sort of like an anteater. It is raccoon-like except no stripes and wanders around the park in Brazil. I saw 4 to 5 of them in the main area so they are common and unafraid of people.

Visit Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte is one of the host cities for the World Cup in 2014. Many soccer games will be played here including one of the semi-final matches. There is a lot of history within the surrounding area as this state of Minais Gerais has towns and cities that were once capitals, and also boasts having given Brazil the most Presidents. There couldn't be a better time to make plans to stop in this city and visit the surrounding area of Minas Gerais before, during, or after the World Cup next year.
