Best Burgers on Oahu
Well done. Medium. With onions and tomatoes. With no onions and extra mayo. With cheese. Without cheese. On a toasted bun. On grilled sourdough.
Everyone has their own idea of what constitutes the perfect burger, and so do these restaurants on Oahu.
Some of these restaurants serve big, juicy burgers that are done just the way you like it, and with all of your favorite fixings.
Others offer specialty burgers with creamy sauces and exotic toppings that may result in you discovering a new favorite burger.
However you like your burger, here are a few places on Oahu worth checking out.
The Counter, home of the "Custom Built Burger," lets you do exactly that - build your own burger exactly how you want it.
The first step in creating your custom burger, which is made from 100% natural Angus, hormone and antibiotic-free, is to determine how big of a burger you want (1/3 lb, 2/3 lb, or 1 lb) and whether you want it on a bun or in a bowl.
The next step is to choose a cheese. Selections include Tillamook Cheddar, Jalapeno Jack, and Gruyere.
Next you choose your toppings (up to 4, each extra topping costs $.50 extra), which include Black Olives, Sliced Cucumbers, Tomatoes, and Scallions. Premium toppings, such as Avocado, Applewood Smoked Bacon, and Chili are $1.00 each.
Then, you choose one of several tasty sauces, such as Basil Pesto, Chipotle Aioli, and Spicy Sour Cream.
Finally, you choose the type of bun you want your burger on (If you opted to have it on a bun) - a Hamburger Bun, Multigrain Bun, or English Muffin.
You can even choose Market Selection products, which are items that are locally sourced, for each feature of your burger.
Order your customized burger with a side of fries.
With so many options and combinations possible, it's no wonder folks from across the island visit The Counter - to create burgers just the way they like them.

Big City Diner
Burgers and diners go hand in hand, and locally-owned Big City Diners' burgers are a popular menu item for both lunch and dinner.
Made from 100% lean ground steak patties, each burger is served on a potato bun and topped with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and onion, and served with a dill pickle spear and fries.
Choose from The Classic Burger, or Big City Diner specialties such as The Big Burger - topped with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, bacon and avocado, Grandma's Famous Kimchee Burger - topped with (what else?) Kimchee, or the Paniolo Burger - topped with a spicy guava barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese, bacon, and crispy onion strings.
With its humble beginnings in a little shop in Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu over 30 years ago, Kua `Aina has since expanded to Honolulu, Tokyo, and London.
Kua `Aina, which means "back country," serves fresh, juicy burgers with homemade marinades and seasonings.
Their offerings include several options, which include the Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Avocado Burger, or Pineapple Burger. Bread options include Kaiser-Roll, Multi-Grain Wheat, or Hearth Rye.
Each burger is topped with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, and you can choose additional toppings, each at an extra charge, such as cheese, bacon, and grilled peppers.
Order with a side of homemade fries to complete your meal.
Honolulu Burger Co.
Honolulu Burger Co. has made a name for itself by using 100% range-fed beef from the Big Island in addition to local produce from farms across the island whenever possible.
In addition to the classic Hamburger and Cheeseburger, other mouth-watering menu items include the Loco Moco Burger - a burger topped with bacon, spam, egg, and brown gravy, the Hawaiian Beach Boy - a teriyaki burger topped with ham and grilled pineapple salsa, the Miso Kutie burger - topped with a red miso glaze, cucumbers, lettuce, tomato, and onion, and their number one seller - the Blue Hawaii Burger - topped with Blue Cheese and Bacon.
If for some reason none of the burgers sound appealing to you, you can always create your own.
Choose a bun (Kaiser Roll, Whole Wheat, or Taro Roll) or do without it and have your burger in a bowl of lettuce instead, and pick your sauce (BBQ, Teriyaki, Honey Mustard, etc.), cheese, and toppings, such as Kim Chee, Bacon, Avocado, and Spam.
Don't forget the fries! Choose one of Honolulu Burger Co.'s several varieties of fries, such as the Blue Cheese, Garlic, or Truffle Fries.

Cattle Company Steakhouse
Although only offered during lunch, Cattle Company Steakhouse's burgers are juicy, delicious, and satisfying.
Each burger is made from Angus Beef, topped with onion rings, and served with coleslaw or french fries.
Although there are only three options listed under burgers, technically there are just two to choose from - the Steakhouse Bacon Burger - topped with Applewood-smoked bacon and sharp cheddar cheese, and the Mushroom & Bleu Burger - topped with sauteed mushrooms and Bleu cheese (the third option is the Shaved Prime Rib "Burger").
Despite the lack of burger options, the Cattle Company knows what goes into making a good burger and knows what fixings to add to make a good burger even better.
