South Goa

Updated on June 11, 2012

My love for Goa is never ending.. so much so that I have visited Goa every year in the past five years..sometimes more than once. If you look at Goa’s map ..the coastline runs fairly vertical over a length of over 100km. Thousands of travellers throng the beaches of Goa every year as it offers a little something for everyone. Most of the tourists spend their time in North Goa which has now become extremely crowded and commercialized. If you are tired of the Northern side of Goa and want to experience a completely different side of Goa with calm, serene and beautiful beaches, I strongly recommend South Goa. In this article I will list down a few but one of the best places to visit in south Goa.

Palolem Beach

By far the most beautiful beach that I have seen in India. It has a moist, welcoming white sand with clear blue waters. The best part is that this beach being a fair distance away from the airport/railway-station and the commercial hub of Goa, is not at all crowded. The waters here are calm and friendly. Various entertainment options are available on the beach as well such as skiing, paragliding, floatable rings and balls for rental etc. A number of shacks with gorgeous food crown the periphery of the beach.

The Nest

To appreciate the beauty of Palolem beach you need to reside in the best location on palolem beach. It is the Nest. The Nest is a beach shack bang on Palolem beach and offers a wonderful experience to it’s customers, with mouth watering gourmet cuisines and refreshingly potent drinks . All of this facing the gorgeous Palolem beach. Literally, a stones throw away from the beach, the place is very economical with beach huts costing some INR400-600. This is too good to be true!! The experience is enhanced further by an extremely courteous and helpful staff that owner Mohan has working for him. One great thing about the location of this place is that it is also 200m away from Silent noise, a disco/club that you must to visit before you die. This place has such a memorable mark in my mind that you might find me there every year during NOV-FEB if work schedule permits.

Silent noise

Who says South of Goa dosent party ?? They party and party very very hard in Silent Noise. Palolem beach is traditionally a fisherman’s village. Hence, the government doesn’t allow loud music beyond 10pm here. For many, this is a deterrent. But, for Silent noise this is not. Silent noise is a club situated on top of a hill surrounded by the sea. It is a silent disc. What I mean by this is there are three very good DJs playing simultaneously at a raised platform and every guest gets a headphone. You can switch headphone channels and listen to your favourite DJ and dance like crazy. The moment you remove the headphones all you can hear is people tapping their feet on the sand and the songs of the sea. The quality of the headphones is supreme and this places runs even if it suddenly starts raining. – The place however, runs a party only on Saturday

Honeymoon island

One fantastic day time get away from Palolem beach, Honeymoon island is a small island located at 20 mins boat ride distance from Palolem beach. It is an uninhabitable island and in all probabilities it will just be you and your friends on the island, a very romantic situation J . Hence, the name probably J. It is a good idea to take your food and drinks along with you as there are no shacks on honeymoon island.

Butterfly island

Butterfly island is similar to Honeymoon island but has a little less space to walk around. The shore is also very steep hence I recommend children to be in strict supervision of parents. Two mountains intersect and create a Butterfly like structure hence the name.
