Best travel destinations in India - Part -I

Updated on August 5, 2011

India is a country which is famous for its heritage, unity and prosperity. If we see the geographical part, India has several tourist destinations. It is impossible to choose some tourist attractions in India. In this hub, I am covering some of my favourite places in India.

Darjelling is famous for its natural beauty, trekking and tea production. . It is located in the state of West Bengal. Some of the places to visit in Darjeeling are ‘Tiger Hill’, Singalia National Park, The Himalayan Zoo, Buddhist monasteries and Mahakal temple. For people who like adventures, there is mountain biking which is the best way to see the hill station. There are a variety of trekking options along the Himalayan ridges near Darjeeling. For shoppers, the best thing to buy in Darjeeling is Tea which is world famous for its taste and aroma. Other things to buy are their local textiles and handicrafts. If you visit Darjeeling, don’t forget to ride on toy train which you don’t forget once you experience it.

Kodaikanal Lake

This is one of the best tourist places in South India. It is situated on Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, which is about 120 kms away from Madurai. Kodaikanal name means ‘The Gift of the Forest”. It has many places of interest. You can do boating in Kodaikanal Lake, which is a star-shaped man-made lake. Other places of interest are Coaker’s walk, Bear Shola waterfall, Green valley view, Guna caves, Brynt Park or the Botanical garden. This place is sure to give you cool climates, lush greenery and breathtaking scenery which are sure to stay with you for life time.

Ladakh is bounded by two mountain ranges, the Great Himalayan and the Karakoram. There are only a few places in the world like ladakh. As it lies in the Himalayan rain shadow, it receives no monsoon during the summer, but you will find heavy rainfall throughout the winter i.e. from November to May. Trekking in Ladakh gives you a different experience. Ladakh lies in the tri-junction of historic ‘Silk Route’ from Sinkiang to West Asia and to the Plains of India. There are a number of interesting monasteries to visit. ‘Zanskar’ is one of Ladakh’s remotest regions. A 300 km long valley ringed by mountains, and is the higher most areas of Ladakh. The best time to visit Ladakh is June – October. Ladakh & Zanskar valley are ideal for trekking.

Manali is the prime holiday destination in India. There are high mountains surrounded by snow and deep boulder strewn gorges. There are thick forests full of cool breeze, bird songs, and fields of wild flowers, small pictures and fruit laden orchards. The distance to Manali from Delhi is 600 km, and from Shimla it is 300km. The temperature can drop below freezing point in winter when heavy woolens are required. Summer temperature is mild. The places to visit in Manali are Hadimba temple, Manu temple, Vasisth, Monasteries, Solang valley.

Munnar is located in the state of Kerala, and one of my favourite travel destinations. It not only attracts domestic travelers but also many foreign travelers are inspired by its natural beauty. It is situated in the confluence of three mountain streams – Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. It is situated about 1600m above sea level. Munnar is marked by vast expanses of tea plantation, colonial bungalows, waterfalls and cool weather. The places to visit near Munnar are: 1) Eravikulam National park, which is famous for its endangered inhabitant – the Nilgiri Tahr. The park has several species of butterflies, birds and animal. 2) Anamudi Peak is located inside the Eravikulam National Park. This is the highest peak in south India at a height of 2700m.3) Mattupetty is known for its masonry dam and beautiful lake. 4) Chinnakanal is famous for its waterfalls, which cascade down a steep rock 2000m above sea level.5) Anayirangal is covered with lush green carpet of tea plants and evergreen forest.
