The Energy Corridor - Greater Houston Area Suburbs

Bunker Hill Village sits in the Houston Energy Corridor that is under ongoing development plans extending through 2025. Energy has been one of the mainstay industries in the growth of the Greater Houston Area, and as such, was recognized in the city's 150th Anniversary celebrations as one of the Seven Wonders of Houston (discussed below).

Incorporated in 1954, Bunker Hill Village became an elite town by the early 1960s. Beginning as a small suburb, it grew in the Cold War Era just West of Houston and its leaders legislated to keep it a residential setting. Previously, the property contained a few homes near sawmills owned and operated by German immigrants. Currently, Bunker Hill Village ranks Number 21 on Bloomberg's list of the 25 Wealthiest Towns in America.

This community is also part of the Memorial Villages that include Piney Point and Hunters Creek Villages, with the former also on the Bloomberg list. The final three villages in the Memorial lot are Hedwig, Hillshire, and Spring Valley Villages. The six banded together in a way to escape Houston annexation attempts, but all six are separate entities. Together, they have been designated a business district called Memorial City, which has no government of its own. The Villages share city services among themselves.

Memorial City is targeted for ongoing growth by Houston, under auspices of a development company. At the same time, businesses are developing in a ring around these six villages, as a growing edge city that will combine the villages geographically into a larger business and residential area, still within the City of Houston.

West Houston Area Attractions and Living

Approximately 5 miles west of he I-610 West Loop of Texas Beltway 8, the outerbelt around Houston, Bunker Hill Village is close to the upscale Great Uptown Business District between itself and Downtown Houston. This district also continues to grow.

The Galleria-Houston Mall is a mixed-use complex in the Great Uptown that comprises a retail mall, office towers, hotels, and a health club. The largest mall in Texas as of 2011, this center includes two full-sized Macy Department stores. In addition, it features an indoor ice skating rink and the most important part is considered to be the area filled with successful financial institutions.

The I-10/State Highway 90 parallel cuts east and west through the midst of the six Memorial Villages and between it on the north and Bunker Hill Village is a complex that includes Memorial City Mall and Memorial City Shopping center. A third mall is the Village Plaza near the same location.

In the US 2010 Census, the population numbered 3,815. Estimates of job growth for Bunker Hill Village from 2010 - 2020 predict a healthy increase in jobs of 26.6%.

Median Home Cost in Bunker Hill Village is $781,700, somewhat less than found by Bloomberg analysts. The range of home prices on Zillow (mid-May 2011) was $3.3 Million to $625,000 with the Median at $1.2 Million.

Memorial Park: Intersection of I-10 and I-610

Memorial City and its six villages and Memorial Park in Houston commemorates the servce men and women of Texas in World Wars I and II, and athletes that include golfers and runners. Twice the acreage of NYC's Central Park, Memorial Park features running trails and an 18-hole golf course that has enjoyed the use of the nation's top golfers. Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is also a feature of the park.

Originally, the land of this park was the US Army's Camp Logan, where many troops trained for combat in World War I.

Seven Wonders 1836 - 1986

In nearby Downtown Houston is an art installation of stainless steel cut into representations of pictures drawn by 1,050 school children and divided among seven pillars. The children drew pictures for the 150th Anniversary of the Founding of Houston. Their drawings celebrate the seven major industries that have most helped to shape the Greater Houston Area: Agriculture, Transportation, Energy, Manufacturing, Medicine, Technology, and Philanthropy. In Bunker Hill Village and Hedwig Village, Agriculture and Manufacturing (sawmills) were high priorities from the beginnings. The pillars stand beside one wall of the Wortham Theater.

As the area around the Villages grows, Bunker Hill Village and the rest will increase in size by adding homeowners that are in the effective income range to afford housing there. However, the areas around the villages are more affordable and will add more middle income level residents. The edge city growing around the Villages will keep the area growing in population and commercial businesses. An award-winning school system is effective in persuading workers to move to this area as well. Teachers at all levels should become more in high demand as indicated, with the growth of the population.

Construction trades should see expansion to accomodate new housing and business properties. Additional healthcare and child care workers will be mandatory.

      The HHA job can be very hard on a worker, so this may be a matter of high turnover, although positions are expected to increase, too.

      I see a trend in trying to keep sick and elderly patient at home under lesser and lesser certified care; although certification training classes are improving for HHA as well.

      Interesting that Home Health Aide is #1 in fastest growing jobs and although the demand for RN's is #2, it is not growing as fast (#7). Good they recognize the need for child care workers (an area where I have experience, which is one of the reasons you hub on 'the plate' was so interesting to me.) v/r
