Cyprus: A place to travel
Cyprus: Location and History
Cyprus is an island located in the Mediterranean Sea. In Greek Mythology it is said that Cyprus is the island which Aphrodite, Goddess of Beauty was born.
The island lies on the east of Greece, south of Turkey, north of Egypt and on the west of Lebanon and Syria. For centuries different countries invaded Cyprus due to the benefits of its geographical position and natural wealth.
Thus, since the Turkish invasion in 1974, Cyprus remains split in two halves. One is the Greek-Cypriot side covering 59% of the island and the other the Turkish-Cypriot side which covers 36% of the islands land. Despite this, half of Cyprus (the Greek-Cypriot side) has been part of the European Union since 2004.
In the last couple of years there have been political discussions and conferences held regarding finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, as it is the only country in Europe which is split in two parts.
