Day at the Market
I find myself surrounded by a mingle of scents, from incense, to fresh fruit, newly cut flowers and food, this is what it feels to be at the Central Market in Guatemala, movement begins at 9am, the shops are starting to open and people are gathering little by little, it’s a very different experience to be here witnessing how everything comes to life and as time elapses and all is in its place, one starts to see many of the colors of Guatemala. Everyone has a smile on their face that invites you into the shops; in each one you will find beautiful hand-made crafts, shoes, cloths and all sorts of trinkets that represent Guatemala’s live culture and beauty. You feel welcome with each turn you take, everyone has something new to show and everyone has something you want. I find myself buying pants, skirts and purses, all made with traditional Guatemalan custom fabric, bright with colors and history, after walking around I notice this small doll shape candles, each one has a different dress that represents a different region, I can’t help but get a few, the detail and bright colors in them calls to me, it’s really hard to choose what to take and what not, in truth I would love to buy all.
But that’s not all, once you are done walking around the top floor one must go down where the fruits, vegetable and flowers are, you are greeted with the flowers sweet aroma and the freshly brought in fruits and veggies. When all shopping is done, one cannot leave without eating Guatemala’s traditional dishes, from tostadas, chuchitos, rellenitos to soups, it’s one in a lifetime experience, you get to share with locals and visitors, making new friends with each bite.
I could spend hours in this place, just walking around buying some trinkets here and there, but most of all, getting to know people, time goes by and in the end you feel happy, that you chose to come to the Market and spend time Discovering Guatemala.
