Desertification: the new reality

Updated on July 26, 2016

Desertification is a form of land degradation ocurring in drylands. In this picture we can see a degraded landscape in northern Colombia. This area used to be a dryforest until the beginning of the XX century, when It started to be destroyed to create grazing areas for the cattle. Due to the land use conflict, wich I consider to be the biggest cause of desertification, now this area looks dead, completely eroded, with no vegetation. The increase of droughts, population growth and the lack of interest for this problems, could take us to a place of no return for drylands occupying about the 40% of the Earth`s surface according to the UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification). The first step to solve this problem is to be aware of it. So, here It is, desertification, an environmental problem spreading through the planet willing to place itself as our new reality if we do not stop it.
