The Raven verses The Belle of Topsail
On November 28, 2013, I had the privilege of visiting and enjoying Thanksgiving dinner with Captain David Luther, his wife Sharon and family and friends aboard The Belle. We cruised the waters of Topsail Island and Intracoastal Waterway. The enclosed lower deck provided a warm delight during a brisk cold November cruise.
The following day, I was a “Snoopy” Castaway on the Raven, hanging out with my pirate friends during their involvement on the Flotilla; watching the sun vanish in the horizon, my large droopy ears picked up words like scallywag, Booty and Arrgh! A whiff of gunpowder alerted me to hit the deck before the cry of, “Fire in the hole.” I tried my best to “see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil” but you know the phrase, can’t beat them. Join them.” I couldn't help myself, I barked out commands like, “Ahoy Matey!”
Shhhh. Don’t tell them I sent you for a wonderful experience on The Belle of Topsail to witness The Raven attack. They are located behind Century 21 at 518 C Roland Avenue Surf City, North Carolina. You can discovery more about them on Facebook, www.belleoftopsail.com and make reservations by calling 910.328.1621

Having Fun in the Ocean isn't Just For Summer Time
I was surprised on this windy November morning to find people in the ocean having fun. These diehard individuals must love the ocean so much that they are not fazed by the unpleasant coldness, I thought. I have to admit I’m a wimp when it comes to cold temperatures because I have a rare allergy that creates a burning sensation when my skin comes in contact. I wonder if those water suites would help fight against the freezing temperatures and snowy weather we have in Iowa?
In the Ocean When it's Cold Outside
Do you like to get in the ocean during the cold months of Oct., Nov. Dec. Jan., and Feb?
I was born in Long Beach, California, moved away when I was five years old to be raised up in Iowa but growing up we seemed to take our summer vacations on the west coast to visit family, the beach and amusement parks. After graduation I moved to the East Coast. Where I lived for twenty plus years. I always thought the idea of surfing was fascinating and thought how wonderful this sport would be to learn. No, this is not me in the photo.
1. The climate on this day was cold and I’m allergic to low temperatures.
2. I never learned the balancing act of staying on a surfboard. The closest to standing on a surfboard I ever came was when my son was a teenager and I stood on his board while it was on his bedroom floor. Ok, now that I’m thinking about it, we did set the board on his bed one time. I stood on top and pretend the movement of his mattress made waves. At least the only fear was falling off the bed because the sharks in the pretend water were not real.
A Rare Allergy

Dog in Cognito?
City Life in Wilmington, North Carolina
On our way back to the car where the parking meter was clicking its last minutes away, while enjoying a delightful lunch experience at The Bourbon Street Restaurant where they serve Louisiana Creole cuisine. My daughter, significant other and I walked past this dog displaying his jazzy character. I couldn’t resist the temptation of acting like a tourist or the paparazzi. I remember thinking, if this pooch isn’t in the movies yet, it’s only a matter of time. We accomplished our arrival back to the car with time to spare so we went into one of the unique shops close by.
Wilmington, has an abundance of unique little stores, quaint restaurants and bars. I had the privilege of eating at a place called, Hell's Kitchen. This sports bar type of atmosphere served a good selection of foods. I hear, this place was used as a setting in an episode of Dawson's Creek. I never realized this piece of information the whole time I lived on the east coast during my dedicated ritual of watching the program when it was first released.
Looking for wine? They even have wine tasting establishments. They have an Annual Wine & Chocolate Festival. The cobblestone streets and old plantation type style homes show the history of this town. The increase of movies are driving producers, actors, and casting companies to this city.
If you happen to find yourself on Front Street in Wilmington, North Carolina be on the lookout for this dog with a badge, sunglasses and markings of a star.

Fishing off the Piers
Fishing piers are located up and down the North Carolina Coast Line. The cost varies depending on which pier a person is on. Some pier attendants charge by the person and some by the amount of fishing poles carried on. Johnnie Mercer’s Pier charges by the amount of fishing rods and there is a parking fee from March 1sth – the beginning of November. The fees for parking go toward keeping the beach clean and healthy. During March – late November, Bottom fish come out to play. An example of “Bottom fish” are Spot, Croaker, Sea Mullet, and Pompano. My sources say, “Florida Pompano is a fish that swims with the waves into extremely shallow water by turning on its side in the surf riding the waves and then when the waves recede this migratory fish swims back down as the waves recedes. They fight hard.” During the cold parts of winter one can catch Dogfish and Skate off the piers and during the summer months Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel are plentiful along with all the Bottom fish.
I recommend going to Tex's Bait & Tackle in Wilmington, NC for your fishing needs or the piers for your bait.
I have spent some overnight excursions out on the piers in the Outer Banks during the time I lived on the east coast. If you haven’t tried this type of fishing and enjoy the sport, try fishing off the piers or the shores. It's not an art experience like fly-fishing because the fish seem to be larger pulling them up, they put up a bigger battle when reeling them in and casting isn't as graceful.
