Updated on September 6, 2011

Its that time of year again! The crisp fall air and blue skies. All accented by the spectacular Fall foliage in the Appalachian Mountains. It is a perfect time to getaway for a weekend and experience what nature has to offer. But where you ask.. West Virginia of course! There is plenty to do and this is the time of year that the state absolutely shines. If you are form the Mid Atlantic Region take time to plan a weekend getaway from late September throughout October. Her are some ideas on your weekend adventure.

Seneca Rocks
Seneca Rocks

Seneca Rocks

There is something for everyone in this state. If you are an outdoor enthusiast there is more than plenty to do. First Stop. Seneca Rocks. Seneca Rocks is located near Petersburg WV. It's elevation is 2200 feet and offer great peaks for those mountain climbers. There are trails of all kinds up and down this mountain. Be wary of your physical condition and don't take on more than you should! My boyfriend and I tried to take the back way up and it kicked our butt! Don't think you can handle the whole climb? Just go to the overlook and watch the climbers. Or if you prefer take an all day or two hour horse ride. You can stop at the General store across the form the mountain too and watch the climbers with your binoculars!

Seneca Caverns
Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns

Keep going down the road a bit and you will run into Seneca Caverns. Their claim is that they have the largest Caverns in WV. You don't have to be a Spelunker to enjoy the trip. The tour lasted about an hour and the sights were nice to see. it is a bit touristy, but nice to stop by. Seneca Caverns offers motel rooms beside the caverns and also has cabins to rent just a little further down the road. Check out the state park website below to see if there are any weekend getaway deals on cabin rentals or lodging! The picture above was taken at Seneica Caverns. It is a stalagmite and a stalactite growing together in what they called " a marriage"

Canaan Valley

Canaan Valley is about an hour away from Seneca Rocks. It offers a resort and beautiful scenery. We went to ride the ski lift and enjoy the fall weather. Canaan is mostly known for it's skiing and snow tubing.  Its resort boasts swimming restaurant, hiking horseback riding and Golf.  It is located on 6,300 acres of land that has 18 miles of trails. This website boasts it is one of the top places to visit in West Virginia.  Check out link below to see more.  Hot tip..This resort is nearly forty miles form Elkins WV.  Elkins is well known in these parts for it Forest Festival.  It is one of the biggest Festivals of the year in West Virginia and always draws a big crowd.  The Forest Festival is usually held during the last part of September.

Blackwater Falls

Black water falls is a must see if you are a fan of waterfalls. Named for the black water that tumbles nearly five stories. The black colored water truly does accent the the fall foliage. There is one trail that leads down to the falls but be aware you have to walk back Up! It can be steep coming back up , but there are benches to rest on.

This West Virginia State Park offers a lodge ans well as Cabins for rent. There are plenty of places to hike as well as fish and boat. Many kayak or canoe . There is a nature center but please not that it closes after labor day. Last I checked the reates for cabind wer around 100 dollars per day.  Check out the link below for rates!

While you are there check out Lindy point and Pendleton Point Overlook for some breathtaking views

Cass Scenic Railroad State park

It has been a while since I have been on this trip but I remember it well. Nothing like a train ride through the fall foliage. It is a great trip to take if you have kids! You can take the full four and a half hour ride from Whitaker station to Bald Knob. This steam driven locomotive winds its way though the fall foliage and past restored company house that now serve as cabin rentals. Check out the link below if you are interested in a train ride!  Fun Fact.. Cass Railroad has murder mystery train rides and has  a Halloween train ride in October!

The New River Gorge

The New River is the longest undammed river in the Eastern United states. The New River Gorge is famous for it's white water rafting. It is also famous for Bridge Day! Bridge day commemorates the completion of the 3032 foot long bridge that stand 876 feet up in the air.  During the annual Bridge day celebration nearly 300 brave souls try their hand at  Parachuting off the 876 foot tall bridge.  (you must meet requirements before signing up to jump)  Nearly 200,000 people flock to this event each year.   The even happens every third Saturday in October. Checkout link below for this years dates and listing of events.

Base Jumping on Bridge Day!

I couldn't not resist mention Geocaching when it comes to West Virginia State Parks. If you don't know what geocaching is, it is a form of treasure seeking. By using your GPS you are to locate "treasure" hidden in some secret location. When you find the treasure you take it, but replace it with another treasure for the next adventurer to find. Sometimes these treasures are kept in lock boxes that have a journal for you to write in when you found the treasure and where you are form.  These are also documented in the website.  There are many geocaching sites in WV . If you love to hike this is a fun activity to do.  Check out the link below to see what geocaching sites are in your area!

Fall Foliage Map

When it comes to weekend Getaways the first place that should come to your mind is West Virginia!. There are many places snuggled up in the Appalachian Mountains that are perfect for that getaway weekend. Check out the fall foliage map above to schedule vaction during the peak time in that area.Check out the websites for weekend getaway vacation packages. The Mountain State is not only perfect for fall getaways but all year round. The next time you you decide to you want to get away from it all check out what West Virginia has to offer.
