Family Vacation With Kids

Updated on April 29, 2011

Travel With Kids

In my opinion, it is important for us to take a family vacation at least once a year. It means we travel with our kids and do things with our kids. It is a time in which parents and kids can get closer to learn and share each others intimacy. You will be surprise of how much family bonding your family will have and that will transform into a happy family. It is hectic sometimes when traveling with kids but it is worth every moment. Don't worry too much about your kids' whining, accommodation, foods, or whatever else because there are always a better way to do things to make life a little easier.

It depends on how far your vacation destination is and what your kids enjoy. Sometimes, it is better to take a road trip if it does not take more than 6 hours drive plus it is much more fun this way. Everyone gets to see different places and interested things. You can make more frequent stops and even have a little picnic along the way. I know the usual complain like, "are we there yet?" as I had heard it many times before.

There are several ways to entertain your kids during a road trip so they won't get bored. In preparation for the trip, we recommend to bring the following: their favorite books, a few board games, laptop, portable electronic game device like gameboy or nintendo DS....Better yet, get a headrest DVD player set with some of their favorite movies. Most SUV and Van nowadays are equipped with TV/DVD system. Another option is to watch movies using the laptop. Believe me, with this many goodies, your kids will enjoy it and you can drive as long as you want. If you decide to take a long road trip like 12 hours drive or more, I would highly suggest that you stop somewhere along your route when you think the kids have had enough and get a hotel room. It is much better if you can plan your route ahead. Remember that this is supposed to be a vacation, so rushing is not allowed.

When traveling with more than 2 kids, you should upgrade your room to a suite as most suites come with two full size beds and a sleeping sofa. If you can't or do not want to spend a little more, then it is fine to get a room but remember to bring along an air bed. That way everyone can sleep comfortably. Most hotels have basic amenities like cable TV, Pay-Per-View, in room game console, swimming pool and game room. So that should take care of their entertainment while hanging around the hotel.

Furthermore, you can save money on food too. Most rest stops or tourist information desk have plenty of advertised coupon magazines for hotels, food, entertainment. You can also find them in the hotels. You will see lots of "buy one get one free" or "buy one get second one half off" lunch and or dinner. Most of these offers are also from well known restaurants like Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Pizza Hut...If you want Chinese food, you get that great saving deal too. Most of the mid-sized hotel like Fairfield Inn & Suites, Courtyard Marriott, Hampton Inn...offer free continental breakfast during your stay. So keep that in mind when you make a reservation.

To enjoy your vacation, you should plan ahead and have an idea of what you want to do at your destination. It will make your trip more enjoyable. You and your kids will appreciate the time you all spend together and it will be a fond memory that last a lifetime especially those with small kids. Don't forget to bring your camera and camcorder!
