Fatty's Restaurant And Steakhouse, The Best Food In Phuket, Thailand

Updated on July 12, 2011

Restaurants in Phuket are normally catering to tourists, selling average food to tourists at inflated prices. When you stray away from the beaten path, and venture out to where the locals and expats live, you will find that the restaurants are far more reasonably priced with much higher quality food. Perhaps the most popular spot on the Island is a little place called "Fatty's". The restaurant is shaped like an old boat, and it has an open air atmosphere, with seating capacity for about 30-40 people. They serve German food such as schnitzel, goulash and stroganoff as well as burgers and steaks, pastas and much more. Prices are very reasonable, about 5USD-10USD per dish. You may find yourself waiting for a seat if you show up after 7PM, as this may be the most popular restaurant on the island and they are full every night.

Fatty's is located in Chalong, on Chao Fah West Road, opposite Land And House Park. If you are coming from the Chalong roundabout, Fatty's will be on the right hand side, across the street from the giant advertising billboard for Land And House Park housing development. Fatty's is approximately a 5 minute drive from the Chalong Pier and about 10 minutes away from Phuket Town. There are very few tuk tuks in this area, and it may be difficult to get there if you do not have your own motorcycle or car.

The Owner

With a name like "Fatty's", you might assume that the owner would be a large man with a big belly, that goes by the nickname "Fatty". Well the owner's name is J.P., and he really doesn't like it when people call him "Fatty". That being said, he is quite a big guy, and many people do not know his name and simply assume he must be Fatty. J.P. previously owned a successful restaurant in Phi Phi Island, but was forced to move after the 2005 Tsunami. Most evenings you will see J.P. cooking every meal himself, in a hot kitchen behind his restaurant. He runs the restaurant with his wife and his daughters and the help of a few staff. J.P is German, however he speaks very clear English and he is friendly with his customers who are a mix of many nationalities.

The Food
The generous portions and reasonable prices are only a small part of what makes Fatty's the best restaurant in Phuket. The meat is always well seasoned prior to cooking, then cooked to perfection and served with a mountain of fried potatoes, mashed potatoes or french fries. The brown sauce that is served with many of the steaks and schnitzels is a wonderful compliment to the meat and potato dishes. Steaks are always tender and juicy and cooked to order (Normally by J.P. himself). One thing is for sure, when you eat at Fatty's, you never go home hungry!

It's so disappointing to see such negative comments and people using slander to make themselves look good. If you feel you have something of value to offer then by all means tell the world about it. But making short sighted / negative comments like the one's above will only serve to make them speaker look bad. It's disappoints me in such a modern age some people could have such archaic views!

That is an ignorant comment! Americans killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the 60s and 70s, and nobody in their right mind would blame this on Don's Cafe. Don is a close personal friend, and I am certain he would be disgusted by your comments.

The Germans killed hundreds of thousands of Americans in World War 2, I WILL NEVER eat at a German owned restaurant! There are better burgers and steaks at Don's Cafe in Rawaii. Sorry ..
