Native Americans Visited Hilton Head Island For Thousands Of Years.
The Native American's used Hilton Head as a temporary living place and a place to harvest the local seafood for thousands of years before the first white man ever came to the area. Huge piles of oyster shells are still on the island today from where the Native American's ate the oysters for thousands of years. It's not known if there was ever a permanent Native American settlement on the island. It was probably because of the hurricanes that visit this area often that there was no permanent settlement by the Native Americans.
The Legend Of The Grey Man May Have Started Here.
It is here on Hilton Head Island that the Grey Man is often seen and its likely here that the Grey Man Legend first got started. It is said that any time that a bad hurricane comes near the Hilton Head area that people will see the Grey Man. It's said that the Grey Man is the ghost of a fisherman who was killed in a hurricane and he comes back to warn people when a bad hurricane is coming. So if your ever on Hilton Head be sure to watch out for ghosts.
Ancient Shell Ring On Hilton Head Island
You can see an ancient shell ring near the entrance to the Sea Pines Nature Preserve. Archeologists believe that Native Americans came here to eat oysters starting about 15,000 years ago. I find that simply amazing. Two other very large shell rings on Hilton Head Island were destroyed and the shells they contained were used to build tabby roads which is roads built out of oyster shells. The shell ring at the entrance to Sea Pines is on the registry of National Historic Places and is protected by law.
First White Men To Visit Hilton Head Island
The Spanish were the first white men to visit Hilton Head Island in 1521. They made contact with the Native Americans they found in the area. With in a hundred years the tribes that once lived in and around Hilton Head Island had been wiped out by diseases brought to the area by the Spanish and English Explorers.
Occupation By The Union During The Civil War.
The island was occupied by Union forces during the Civil War. African American's in the area ran away in huge numbers and made their way to Hilton Head island and some of their decedents still live in the area today.

I quite often see wild dolphins looking for fish in the back waters of Hilton Head Island and in the surf along the beaches. And if you love pelicans like I do you'll find that Hilton Head Island has a huge population of pelicans that you can watch and enjoy. And if you've never been crabbing you just have to buy a crab net and some chicken necks for bait and spend an afternoon crabbing with your children. It will be an experience that you and your children will remember for a lifetime. If you like to look for sea shells go just after day light when the tide is at its lowest point and you just may be rewarded with some wonderful treasures.
