Florabama Bar on the Redneck Riviera

Updated on January 15, 2012

The Florabama

Babes, Bras and Bushwackers

Smack dab beachfront on the state line of Florida and Alabama lies a bar of barnacles, sun-beaten sea dogs, and women rode hard and put up wet. Named for the two state lines that it straddles, its history is storied. When hurricanes threaten, locals drink on the stateside that has not been issued a mandatory evacuation yet. Sturdy enough, it features mostly a sandy floor with several wooden stories. The bar has washed away from several hurricanes of the past, weathered last year's British Petroleum oil spill, but is now going stronger than ever. Women who visit leave their bras on a clothesline before the main band area (see second video). The bands that play here are always excellent beach bands and the bar features a frothy, frozen alcoholic concoction called a bushwacker, which tastes like the best vanilla shake you've ever had. Beaches feature sugar sand and clear water, with Orange Beach on the Alabama side and Perdido Key on the Florida side. It became known as the Redneck Riviera when development began in the 1970s.

Daytime at the FloraBama

Fun All Day & Night

People watching is the name of the game here. There will be all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds here; that's the beauty of it in my opinion. Keep in mind that bathrooms are limited, despite the loads of money assuredly made here. There is a normal bathroom with always a long wait for the ladies. A "renovation" of sorts was finished as the bar was finally forced to add a real roof; tarp had long served its purpose here. With that addition, extra space was added on the second floor to view the band and guests dancing below under colorful strings of bras over the dance floor. It can get pretty crowded here. Outside under the large tent, is another band and large dance area. During the day, beach wear with a cover-up is fine and there is the beach with activities such as volleyball and jetskis. At night, most wear more clothing but that's not a guarantee! You are in the Redneck Riviera, after all.

Glad you enjoyed it. It was there when I was at USM during years of '87 through '91, but we went to Cash's in Fort Walton Beach. I really regret not going to the FloraBama during those years, but , believe me, I've made up for it since then! LOVED your comment about Jimmy Buffet- made me laugh! Demi

I wonder if it was there in my days at USM. Jimmy Buffet and I were juniors together...he dropped out, the dumbass. What will he do without a formal education. At any rate, it sounds like a venue he would have loved. Thanks for sharing. WB
