Former Ameritrust garage, Cleveland, Ohio
This 8-story parking garage aligned along the east side of East Ninth Street at Prospect Avenue in downtown Cleveland is the former Ameritrust complex garage. Originally developed in tandem with Marcel Breuer’s 29-story black granite shaft of an office tower at East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue, the garage is linked to a cluster of lower office structures by a pedestrian bridge spanning the Prospect/Huron intersection.
The parking garage was initially controlled by Ameritrust Bank (formerly the Cleveland Trust Company). By the late 1980s, however, Ameritrust was planning a move to a new high-rise office structure on the western flank of Public Square, to be created by the local development powerhouse of The Richard E. Jacobs Group.
Those plans evaporated on Ameritrust’s decision in 1991 to be merged into rival Key Bank. In a multi-party settlement, The Richard E. Jacobs Group ended up owning all of Ameritrust’s former facilities: the Marcel Breuer tower, the grand Italianate Cleveland Trust Company banking hall, several related smaller office structures, and the parking garage.
In 2005, the Commissioners of Cuyahoga County purchased the former Ameritrust facilities for a planned consolidation of all county offices into a revitalized complex of structures. But by 2008, it became apparent that these facilities could not feasibly be redeveloped to meet county needs, and the Commissioners sought bidders to purchase the properties for other development.
Soon thereafter, local residential developer/manager K&D Group provided the best bid to the County for eventual redevelopment. However, those plans have also stalled, and the former Ameritrust facilities remain vacant today. The parking garage remains the only income-generating component of the multi-building complex.
