Shreveport? Where's That?
For those who don't know, Shreveport is the third-largest city in the state of Louisiana and the 109th-largest city in the nation. Together with it's smaller sister-city, Bossier, the Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area boasts a population of roughly 400,000 people.
Located in the northwest corner of the state, Shreveport is the economic and cultural center of the Ark-La-Tex, which is the name given to the region where Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas meet (although Oklahoma is sometimes included as well). That being the case, there are lots of great things to see and do in Shreveport.
Sci-Port: Louisiana's Science Center
If you're on the hunt for something fun for the kids, look no further than Sci-Port, Louisiana's Science Center.
Located on the exciting Shreveport Riverfront, this 92,000-square-foot entertainment and science complex has over 290 science, technology and math experiments. Its offerings include, among other things, a laser Space Dome Planetarium, an IMAX Dome Theater, a gift shop and a cafe.
With lots of exciting experiments, activities and shows, Sci-Port was practically tailor-made for kids, although adults will have lots of fun there, too.
Gators & Friends Alligator Park and Exotic Zoo
Another great stop in Shreveport is Gators & Friends Alligator Park and Exotic Zoo.
Here you can watch alligators as the fascinating reptiles feed and swim.
In addition, they showcase a number of rare and exotic animals that can be touched in the petting zoo.
All in all, it makes for an extremely fascinating outing.
The Louisiana State Fair
Late October sees the arrival of the Louisiana State Fair in Shreveport. It's an event that draws massive attendance not just from all over Louisiana, but from neighboring states as well.
In addition to the expected carnival rides and games, other events include the PRCA Rodeo, State Cheerleading Championships, the State Fair Car Show and more.
Other free attractions include daily circus shows, escape artists and magic acts, just to name a few.
Also free is the Ultimate Safari, which features a wide array of exotic animals, including elephants, giraffes, and camels.
Shreveport is also vibrant and active when it comes to adult activities. Nearby Louisiana Downs is one of the premiere racetracks in the nation.

There are 15 world-class golf courses (including championship courses designed by PGA veterans Hal Sutton and Fred Couples), as well as parks, museums and nature exhibits.

Shreveport is also home of college football's Independence Bowl.
