Get Away from It All at Alabama's Mt. Cheaha State Park
If you'll be traveling through the Deep South region of the United States, Alabama's Cheaha State Par is a must-see destination. The oldest facility in Alabama's extensive state park system, Cheaha State Park is situated on Cheaha Mountain, partially in Cleburne County and partially in Clay County.
The park is quite beautiful, with scenery that is unexpected this far south in the U.S. After all, with an elevation of 2407 feet above sea level, Cheaha Mountain is the highest point in the state of Alabama. The mountain is part of the foothills of the Appalachian mountain range and the park is surrounded by the beauty of the Talladega National Forest.
Cheaha State Park Accommodations
The park is a beautiful spot to spend a day, a weekend, or much longer. There are accommodations available to meet every need, ranging from tent and RV campsites, hotel rooms, cabins and chalets, and a group lodge. There are also meeting facilities, making the park a perfect spot for a reunion, wedding, business meeting, or other special event.

You can enjoy many fun and relaxing outdoor activities at Alabama's Cheaha State Park and in the surrounding area.
Water Activities
Those who enjoy fishing will relish spending time on Lake Cheaha, a six acre lake located at the base of the mountain. The lake is reputed to be an excellent site for bass and bluegill fishing. Both Jon boats and paddle boats are available for rental during the summer months. The lake is also a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying picnic meals. In addition to the lake, overnight guests can also enjoy the swimming pool located at the park's hotel.
Trail Activities
There are a number of scenic hiking trails in Cheaha State Park, with something with a level of difficulty appropriate for just about everyone. Available trails range in difficulty from an easy quarter mile interpretive walk to a much more difficult lake trail that includes a significant change in elevation. Additionally, there is a 10-mile mountain bike trail in the park that is home to the yearly Mountain Bike Championship race. The park is also located close to the Kentuck ORV (off-road-vehicle) trail and the Pinhoti Trail.
Dining
The Cheaha Mountain Restaurant is a great place to enjoy meals. The food is a great and the view is absolutely spectacular. It's situated atop the mountain and the back wall is made up of continuous windows. You'll be able to enjoy a birds-eye view of the surrounding Talladega National Forest while enjoying tasty country cooking for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
